THE LAST CONDITION
The lawyer turned the final page.“Grace receives 80% of Harold’s estate—but only if she accepts it willingly.”
Grace shook her head. “I don’t want his money. When he couldn’t pay me, I stayed. When he had nothing, I stayed. I stayed because he was alone.”Harold’s daughter began crying. “Dad asked me to visit last Christmas. I told him I was busy.”
The lawyer opened one final envelope.“My children, don’t fight Grace. She gave me what money couldn’t buy, someone who stayed.”Then he handed Grace a photograph of Harold in his hospital bed.
Behind it were his final words:“The 80% was never your payment. I only wish I had thanked you sooner. For 47 nights, I woke hoping my children would come home. Every time, it was you who opened my door.”
