Seven things if you need to gain weight.

People often think you are lucky because you are naturally thin. But gaining weight can actually be difficult, and nobody really talks about what to do.

1. Eat the same meals. Just add more to them.

You do not have to start eating many more meals, especially if you already struggle to finish your food. Eat your normal meal, but add an egg, more healthy oil when cooking, or some groundnut. Adding small things to your usual meals can be easier than eating another full meal.

2. Add healthy fats while cooking.

Instead of adding oil only after your food is ready, add some while cooking. A tablespoon of palm oil or coconut oil can increase the calories in your meal without making the meal much bigger. It also helps your body absorb some vitamins from vegetables.

3. Avoid drinking a lot of water before or during meals.

Drinking too much can make you feel full before you have eaten enough. Try to drink your water after eating instead of having a large drink shortly before your meal.

4. Eat groundnut, coconut, avocado and eggs.

These foods give you a lot of nutrients and calories without requiring you to eat a huge amount of food. Have them between meals if you can, or add them to your meals if eating between meals is difficult.

5. Lift something heavy twice a week.

If you are trying to gain weight, you also want some of that weight to become muscle. You do not need a gym to start. You can lift things like water containers or a bag of rice. Even about ten minutes, twice a week, can help.

6. Get your thyroid and iron checked.

Not eating enough can make you stay thin, but it is not the only possible reason. If you eat well and have stayed around the same weight for years, it is worth speaking with a healthcare professional and getting checked instead of simply trying to eat more.

7. Consider a stool test if you often have stomach problems.

If you frequently have diarrhoea, stomach problems or food seems to pass through you quickly, there may be an underlying problem affecting how your body uses food. Parasites and problems absorbing nutrients can happen and can be tested for.

That is seven.

Now do three.

You have four stock cubes in your kitchen, and you have probably never stopped to read what is inside them.

Turn the wrapper over and look at the ingredients.

Salt comes first.
Then a flavour enhancer.
Then starch, colour, and only a small amount of ingredients that actually came from food.

So, the cube is mainly salt and flavour enhancers, made to make your food taste stronger.

And you are paying more for it than you would pay for salt.

The bigger problem is that these cubes have replaced foods that can give your soup real flavour.

Here is what you can use instead.

› Iru or dawadawa: Add 1 tablespoon early while cooking. It breaks down into the soup and gives it a deep, fermented flavour. This is one of the natural flavours the stock cube is trying to imitate.

› Ground crayfish: Add 2 tablespoons to a family-sized pot. It gives the soup a deep, savoury taste and also adds protein.

› Ogiri: For egusi or bitterleaf soup, use just ½ teaspoon. It has a strong flavour, so you do not need much.

› Dried fish: Soak it in hot water for 20 minutes first. Then add both the fish and that soaking water to your soup. Do not throw the water away because it contains a lot of the fish's flavour.

› Onion and fresh pepper: Use these to build more flavour in the soup.

› Salt: Add the salt yourself. This way, you know exactly how much salt is going into your food instead of getting most of it from a cube.

Now, here is the part you should expect.

Your first soup without the cube may not taste as strong.

That does not necessarily mean the food has no flavour. Your tongue has been used to the strong taste from flavour enhancers for years, so natural flavours may seem weak at first.

The second pot should taste better.

By the third, your taste buds can start adjusting. You may even notice that the stock cube has a strange, chemical-like taste that you did not notice before.

So do not try to change everything at once.

Make just one pot this week without a stock cube.

Just one.

Then see how it tastes.

You have been buying vitamin C and throwing most of it away.

Not because the vitamin C is fake.

It is because vitamin C gets used up when it does its job in your body.

Think of vitamin C like a worker.

It goes to work, gives something away to help protect your cells, and becomes tired and used up.

Your body has ways of taking that used-up vitamin C and turning it back into usable vitamin C. This is called recycling.

But that recycling system needs other substances in your body to work properly.

This is where zinc comes into the conversation.

If you are low in zinc and other nutrients your body needs, you may not be getting the best support for all these processes.

Think of it like a bucket with a hole in it.

You can keep pouring more water into the bucket, but if you do not deal with the problem, some of that water keeps running out.

That is the point.

Instead of thinking, “I need more and more vitamin C,” think about whether your diet is giving your body the nutrients it needs to actually use what you are taking.

And zinc is one of those important nutrients.

You lose zinc through sweat, and this is a hot country. Stress can also increase your body’s demand for nutrients.

And some foods that give you zinc are foods many people do not eat regularly anymore.

Liver.
Beef.
Pumpkin seeds.
Egg yolk.

So before you buy another bottle of vitamin C, look at your food first.

Eat something with zinc in it this week.

You may find that improving the basics was more important than simply taking more vitamin C.You have been buying vitamin C and throwing most of it away.
