HEALTH ALERT: Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled a new healthcare development roadmap, revealing that Lagos needs about 40,000 doctors and 40,000 nurses to adequately serve its growing population.

Speaking at the 2nd Eko Health Convention, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the state currently has only about 7,000 doctors, far below what is required. He also revealed that Lagos faces a ₦100 billion healthcare funding gap between current budget allocations and the sector’s needs.

The governor said the state is expanding healthcare access through digital systems, health insurance and workforce development, while plans are underway to establish a University of Medicine and Health Sciences to train more doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Sanwo-Olu added that enrolment under the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme has surpassed 1.5 million residents, while emergency healthcare interventions under the state’s assistance programme have already saved lives.

“Access without excellence is a queue. Excellence without access is a showpiece. Lagos is not interested in either,” the governor said.

He stressed that the goal is to build a healthcare system where every resident can access quality medical care regardless of location or income.
