Yesterday we got the honor of our article making it to The Post Newspaper. We were addressing the issue at the Ts'osane landfill. Speculating on what could have caused the fire, using science. Addressing the impacts this has on the community, and suggesting ways to mitigate this risk. Using science and research to impact lives.

As we continue to work towards sustainability and reducing the amount of waste we generate and sand to landfills, it is important to find sustainable solutions, one of which is recycling of organic waste.
Organic waste includes any biodegradable matter from plants and animals, such as, yard trimminings, wood and paper products, food scraps, and animal waste. These are easily decomposed into simpler molecules.
The different ways we can use to recycle organic matter include, composting, vermi-composting, and anaerobic digestion. Composting is the decomposition of matter in the presence of Oxygen to produce compost. Vermi-composting involves the use of earthworms to digest oganic matter to a high-quality fertilizer. Anaerobic digestion makes use of a biodigester to decompose waste in the absence of Oxygen, to biogas and liquid fertilizer. Depending on what your end goal is, these processes convert organic waste to more valuable products.

The current situation at the Ha Ts'osane dumping site has been let to go on for too long. And this has resulted in devastating effects for the residents. It is our responsibility to aid the situation by reducing the amount of waste we create. Because no matter how we look at it, we are all contributing to this, as all the waste generated in our homes and businesses ends here.
So what can we do? Let's practice the 6Rs of Sustainability. Rethink. Refuse. Reuse. Reduce. Repair. Recycle. If we do this, this will reduce the amount of waste produced while we await a permanent solution to this saga. Lets be solution, and not the problem.
