HOW CAN AFRICAN BUSINESSES TRADE ACROSS BORDERS? 29/09/2026

Do you run a small business?

AfCFTA opens 54 African markets, but most SMEs have no idea how to use it.

I asked Dr. Eric Rutto, President of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, what a small business actually needs to do to start selling across the continent.

HOW CAN AFRICAN BUSINESSES TRADE ACROSS BORDERS? Africa trades far more with the rest of the world than it does with...

This weekend, I had the privilege of being MC and moderator at the screening of Rhino.

It was incredible seeing rhino protection through the eyes of the people who make it possible.

When we think of rhino protection, we picture a ranger in the bush.

The film shows how many more hands it takes: trackers, vets, researchers, conservationists, communities, technology, intelligence, funding, and so many people working behind the scenes.

Kenya is now home to more than 2,200 rhinos.

Our black rhino population has grown from fewer than 400 in the 1980s to more than 1,100 today.

Behind those numbers are people, commitment and years of hard work.

That’s what I loved about the film, Rhino.

It took us beyond the animal and into the human story behind its protection.

I must say I loved moderating this!

The best conversations take us beneath what we think we know and introduce us to the people behind the story.

A powerful film. An important conversation. And a reminder of what committed people can protect when they work together. 🦏

Big thanks KWS Loisaba Conservancy for leading this conversation.

If you ever decide to start a new (and rather ambitious) business while studying, raising children who require you to be at school almost as much as you are at yours, trying to lose a few kilos, keep fit and generally balance life like a tightrope walker… ask me for notes. 😂

I’m beginning to think we need a School Mum × Founder Support Group.

The membership requirements are simple: attend lectures, attend school matches, remember assignment deadlines, remember everyone else’s deadlines, attempt to exercise, eat sensibly, build the business and somehow know which day you are supposed to be where.

As a single mum, my calendar has developed a personality of its own.

Anyway, these are the scenes: walking to class, taking notes, trying to get my steps in and pretending I have everything under control. 🤓😂

(Writing this when I’ve discovered I’ve been sitting in the wrong class, wondering where everyone is)

Balance is a funny thing 😁

There is an interesting point in life when you stop asking yourself, “What have I achieved?” and start asking, “What do I want to experience next?”

I have spent a large part of my adult life building a career, learning new industries, starting businesses, raising a family and figuring things out as I went along.

There is a temptation, after doing all of that, to think the next stage should be about consolidation protecting what you have built and settling into a version of yourself that already makes sense.

I am not particularly interested in that.

I find myself more curious about what I have not done yet, what I have not learned, which rooms I have not entered and which parts of myself have not had much room to develop.

That does not mean rejecting everything that came before. I think experience gives you a much better starting point for deciding what comes next.

At this stage, I am not looking for a completely new life.

I am interested in making the life I already have bigger, richer and more interesting.

There is a difference. ❤️

Africa’s next growth story will not be built by policy alone.

It will be built by businesses that trade across borders. Investors who see beyond individual markets. Entrepreneurs who can scale. And policymakers willing to remove the barriers that still make doing business across Africa harder than it should be.

That is the conversation coming to Nairobi.

The Africa Commerce & Industry Summit 2026 brings together business leaders, investors, policymakers and entrepreneurs from across the continent to ask a bigger question:

How do we turn Africa’s enormous trade potential into real business, real investment and real opportunity?

14–16 October. Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi.

If you are building, investing or doing business in Africa, this is a conversation you should be part of.

This year taught me that peace can feel strangely unfamiliar when you’ve spent years mistaking pressure for ambition.

I’m learning not to fill every silence.

Some things don’t need fixing.

Some things just need leaving alone. 🤎

The older I get, the less impressed I am by people who are impressive.

Give me someone kind.

Someone curious.

Someone who keeps their word.

That’s impressive. 💚

This may be Africa’s biggest IPO. But the real story isn’t the IPO.

On September 14th, Dangote Refinery opens its public share offering.

Billions of shares.

Up to $1.6 billion to be raised.
A refinery aiming to more than double its capacity.

But there’s a bigger question hiding underneath:

Can Africa finance its own industrialisation?

What happens when African capital markets are used to finance an African industrial giant?

And what could this mean for how the continent funds , and owns its next generation of infrastructure?

This is ‘Let’s Decode Africa’.

At Sable Africa we go beyond the headlines to understand the data, capital and decisions shaping Africa.

My girls. 🤍

My greatest joy.
