Milan’s gates are more than just beautiful landmarks; they tell the story of the city’s past.
Built as entrances through the walls that defended Milan over the centuries, these gates changed from fortified openings into monumental arches. They are usually divided into Roman, Medieval, and Spanish gates, although many were rebuilt during Napoleon’s era.
Many of their names reveal the destinations they once led to: Porta Venezia toward Venice, Porta Romana toward Rome, Porta Ticinese toward Pavia (ancient Ticinum), and Porta Garibaldi (once called Porta Comasina) toward Como.
Originally, Milan had 11 main gates; today, six remain, each linked to one of the city’s historic sestieri (districts). ✨

Long before Milan became the city we know today, its symbol was the legendary half-woolen sow (scrofa semilanuta). 🐗
According to legend, the Celtic leader Belloveso crossed the Alps in search of a new homeland. Guided by a goddess who appeared in his dream, he arrived in the plains of northern Italy and discovered a remarkable wild sow with long woolly fur covering the front half of her body. Taking it as a sign, he founded the city on that very spot and named it Mediolanum—a name traditionally linked to the mysterious semilanuta, or "half-woolen."
A small creature with a big place in Milan's oldest origin story.
