Does onion juice help hair fall?

Mostly no, based on current scientific evidence. Onion juice is not a proven treatment for common causes of hair fall such as pattern hair loss, hormonal hair loss, nutritional deficiencies, stress-related shedding or postpartum hair loss.

Where it may possibly help

One small study from 2002 tested crude onion juice in people with patchy alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition causing round bald patches. Some participants showed more regrowth than those using plain water. However, the study was small, short-term and has not been adequately replicated. Therefore, the evidence remains weak.

Proposed scientific reasons

Onions contain sulfur compounds and antioxidants such as quercetin. Theoretically, these may:

* reduce local oxidative stress and inflammation
* have mild antimicrobial activity
* irritate the scalp mildly, possibly increasing local blood flow

However, these mechanisms are largely theoretical. Applying sulfur to the scalp has not been shown to supply the follicle with the amino acids needed to produce keratin, nor has onion juice been proven to block DHT, correct nutritional deficiencies or reverse follicular miniaturisation.

Why it may sometimes appear to work

Hair shedding naturally fluctuates, and alopecia areata can spontaneously regrow. Therefore, improvement after applyionion juice does not necessarily prove that the onion caused it.

Cutting the hair does not reduce true hair fall from the roots.

Hair grows from follicles located inside the scalp. Cutting only removes part of the visible hair shaft, which is made of keratinised, non-living cells. It does not change the activity of the follicle, blood supply, hormones or hair-growth cycle.

Why can it sometimes appear that hair fall has reduced?

* Short hairs are less noticeable on the floor, pillow or during washing.
* Each fallen strand is shorter, so the overall bundle looks smaller.
* Shorter hair tangles less and experiences less pulling during combing.
* Trimming damaged ends can reduce hair breakage, but not shedding from the root.

Therefore, cutting may help when the problem is breakage caused by split ends, chemicals, heat or rough handling. It will not treat root-level shedding such as telogen effluvium, hormonal or nutritional problems, thyroid disease, androgenetic alopecia or scalp disorders. Hair shedding is controlled by the follicle’s growth cycle, and losing about 50–100 hairs daily can be normal. .

helmet usually does not directly cause hair fall from the roots and does not cause genetic male-pattern or female-pattern baldness.

However, wearing a helmet for long hours—especially one that is tight, poorly ventilated or unclean—can create friction, pressure, heat and sweat, which may worsen certain scalp problems.

Helmet-related scalp and hair problems

* Hair breakage: Repeated rubbing against the inner padding can break the hair shaft, particularly when hair is dry, chemically treated or tied tightly.
* Frictional thinning: A very tight helmet repeatedly rubbing the same area may rarely cause localised thinning. Hair generally regrows after the friction is corrected.
* Scalp pimples or folliculitis: Sweat, oil, dead skin and friction from helmets can block or irritate follicles, producing itchy or painful bumps.
* Worsening dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis: Heat, sweating and prolonged occlusion may increase greasiness, itching and scaling in susceptible people.
* Contact irritation: Helmet padding, accumulated sweat, detergent residue or an unwashed liner may cause redness, burning or itching.
* Hair pulling: Wearing a tight ponytail, bun, clips or turban beneath the helmet can create traction and contribute to hair loss over time.
