CAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS DAMAGE THE SKIN’S “GOOD” BACTERIA? 🧬
Our skin is not sterile — it is home to a huge community of microorganisms known as the skin microbiome.
Among them are bacteria that help maintain the skin’s balance and support its natural protective barrier.
That’s why the way we care for our skin matters.
What can disturb this balance?
🔹 Harsh cleansing products
Some surfactants can remove not only dirt and excess oil, but also some of the lipids in the outermost layer of the skin. Excessive cleansing may weaken the skin barrier.
🔹 Inappropriate pH
Healthy skin has a naturally slightly acidic environment. Products with a more alkaline pH can temporarily increase the skin’s pH and influence the environment in which microorganisms live.
🔹 Antimicrobial ingredients
Some preservatives and antimicrobial substances can inhibit certain microorganisms that naturally live on the skin. However, it is important to remember that preservatives are essential for the safety of many cosmetic products, and their presence in a properly formulated product does not automatically mean that they disrupt the microbiome.
So, should we be afraid of skincare products?
No.
Current reviews suggest that most properly formulated cosmetic products do not cause major disruptions to the microbiome of healthy skin. What matters is the entire formulation, rather than one ingredient taken out of context.
Healthy skincare is therefore not about “killing all the bacteria.”
It is about cleansing the skin without unnecessarily disturbing its barrier and allowing its natural ecosystem to function.
Because healthy-looking skin is about more than what we see in the mirror.
It is also about the skin barrier, pH and microbiome — all working every day, even when we don’t think about them.

CZY KOSMETYKI MOGĄ NISZCZYĆ „DOBRE” BAKTERIE SKÓRY? 🧬
To oczyszczać skórę bez niepotrzebnego naruszania jej bariery i pozwolić jej naturalnemu ekosystemowi funkcjonować.

Did you know that washing your face too often can harm your skin?
Clean skin doesn't mean skin stripped of everything natural.
Our skin has a protective barrier that helps retain moisture, protects against external factors and supports its healthy functioning.
Washing too often, using harsh cleansers or exposing your skin to hot water can weaken this barrier, leading to dryness, tightness, irritation and increased sensitivity.
How should you cleanse your facial skin properly?
✨ Wash your face in the morning and evening as a general guideline, adjusting the frequency to your skin's needs.
✨ Choose gentle cleansers that don't leave your skin feeling excessively tight.
✨ Use lukewarm water instead of hot water.
✨ Don't scrub your skin or rub it vigorously with a towel. Gently pat your face dry.
✨ After cleansing, apply a moisturiser that supports your skin's protective barrier.
What about oily skin?
Oily skin needs hydration too! Excessive degreasing can lead to irritation and a weakened skin barrier. However, this doesn't mean that every additional wash automatically increases sebum production.
Dry, sensitive skin or skin with a compromised barrier may require an even gentler approach.
🌿 Remember: not every additional wash is harmful. What matters is the frequency, the type of cleanser, water temperature, cleansing technique and your skin's current condition.
Skincare isn't about doing more. It's about doing what your skin truly needs.
Take care of your skin with kindness, not excessive cleansing.

Zbyt częste mycie, agresywne preparaty czy gorąca woda mogą osłabiać tę barierę, prowadząc do przesuszenia, uczucia ściągnięcia, podrażnień i zwiększonej wrażliwości.
Jak prawidłowo oczyszczać skórę twarzy?
✨ Myj twarz zazwyczaj rano i wieczorem, dostosowując częstotliwość do potrzeb swojej skóry.
W pielęgnacji nie chodzi o to, by robić więcej. Chodzi o to, by robić to, czego Twoja skóra naprawdę potrzebuje.

🌿 THE SKIN MICROBIOME — THE INVISIBLE PART OF YOUR SKIN
Did you know that a huge community of microorganisms lives on your skin?
These include bacteria, fungi and viruses, which together form an ecosystem known as the skin microbiome. This does not mean that your skin is “dirty”. Quite the opposite — a normally functioning microbiome is a natural part of healthy skin.
Why is the skin microbiome important?
🔹 It supports the skin barrier
Microorganisms interact with skin cells and are involved in processes that help maintain a healthy skin barrier.
🔹 It helps protect the skin
The microbiota can make it more difficult for some potentially harmful microorganisms to colonise the skin, including through competition for space and nutrients.
🔹 It interacts with the skin’s immune system
The microbiome is involved in regulating local immune responses.
🔹 It helps maintain the skin’s natural environment
Microorganisms contribute to processes that influence, among other things, the pH and chemical composition of the skin’s surface.
Does everyone have the same microbiome?
No.
Its composition varies between individuals and also depending on the area of the body. The conditions on dry skin are different from those in more humid areas, and different again in areas with a higher concentration of sebaceous glands.
The microbiome is also influenced by factors including age, environment, skin condition, lifestyle-related factors and certain medications.
What does a “disturbed microbiome” mean?
This is referred to as dysbiosis — a change in the balance of the microbial community.
Research has found associations between changes in the skin microbiome and certain skin conditions, including atopic dermatitis, acne and psoriasis. However, this does not mean that every microbiome change causes disease — these relationships are complex and are still being actively researched.
The most important thing:
Healthy skin does not need to be sterile. It needs balance.
That is why skincare is not only about active ingredients, exfoliation and cleansing.
It is also about respecting the skin’s natural barrier and the environment in which its microbiome lives.
Beautiful skin is not only about what we put on it, but also how we care for its natural balance. 🌿

Mikroorganizmy współpracują z komórkami skóry i uczestniczą w procesach związanych z utrzymaniem prawidłowej bariery naskórkowej.
Mikrobiom uczestniczy w regulowaniu lokalnych odpowiedzi immunologicznych.
🔹 Pomaga utrzymywać odpowiednie środowisko skóry
Mikroorganizmy uczestniczą w procesach wpływających m.in. na pH i skład chemiczny powierzchni skóry.

🌿 ALOE AND THE SKIN MICROBIOME — WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY?
Our skin is not “clean” — and that is actually a good thing. It is home to a vast community of microorganisms: bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes. Together, they form the skin microbiome, which helps maintain the skin’s protective barrier and overall balance.
What about aloe? 🌿
Aloe vera contains biologically active compounds, and laboratory studies suggest that some of these compounds may act against certain microorganisms. One particularly interesting component is acemannan, a polysaccharide naturally found in aloe.
💚 Healthy skincare is not just about “killing bacteria.”
The goal is to maintain the skin barrier and microbiological balance, rather than eliminating microorganisms completely.
And aloe?
Aloe is an interesting skincare ingredient that may help support skin condition through its moisturizing properties and the biological activity of its natural compounds. Clinical studies also suggest its potential as a supportive ingredient in managing certain skin concerns.
🌿 Healthy skin is an ecosystem. Let’s focus on balance, not sterility.

A aloes?
🌿 Zdrowa skóra to ekosystem. Dbajmy o jej równowagę, a nie o sterylność.

🌿 WHY CAN ALOE VERA HAVE AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECT?
Inflammation is a natural response of the body. It occurs when the immune system responds to an injury, infection, or other irritating factors.
The problem begins when the inflammatory response becomes too strong or continues for too long.
And this is exactly where aloe vera becomes interesting from a scientific perspective. 🌿
🔬 WHAT HAPPENS AT THE CELLULAR LEVEL?
Aloe vera contains many biologically active compounds, including polysaccharides such as acemannan, as well as other bioactive components.
Laboratory studies indicate that aloe vera extracts may influence pathways involved in the inflammatory response.
One of these is NF-κB — an important regulator of gene expression associated with inflammation.
In in vitro studies, researchers have observed, among other things:
• reduced activation of the NF-κB pathway
• reduced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and IL-8
• effects on the JNK and ERK signalling pathways
• reduced expression of certain mediators involved in the inflammatory response.
This means that aloe vera does not simply act like an “off switch” for inflammation.
Its potential effect appears to involve influencing mechanisms that regulate the inflammatory response of cells.
🌱 AND WHAT ABOUT ACEMANNAN?
Acemannan is a polysaccharide characteristic of Aloe vera gel.
It is one of the compounds believed to have immunomodulatory properties. Research on aloe vera and acemannan suggests that they may influence the response of immune system cells. However, many of these findings come from laboratory and preclinical studies.
🌿 NATURE + SCIENCE
This is what I find most interesting about aloe vera.
It is not about attributing miraculous properties to it.
It is about understanding what we actually know, what looks promising, and what science has not yet confirmed.
Because informed supplementation begins with knowledge — not promises.
