Id say some great memories were made in the galtymore many stories I heard from mam.

On a Friday night in Cricklewood the queue stood four abreast up the Broadway, and every one of them had a Monday morning on a building site or a hospital ward waiting at the far end of it.

🪗 The Galtymore opened at 194 Cricklewood Broadway in 1952, founded by a Kerryman named John Byrnes and run by his family to the last night. It took its name from the mountain in the Galtees. Two halls under one roof, country and showbands in one and a disco in the other, and the biggest bar most of them had ever stood at. In early 1967 Larry Cunningham and the Mighty Avons drew 6,850 paying customers in a single night. It was one stop on a whole circuit: the Blarney on Tottenham Court Road, the Buffalo in Camden Town, the Innisfree in Ealing, the Hibernian in Fulham Broadway.

More than 500,000 people left independent Ireland between 1945 and 1960, and roughly three in four of them went to Britain. Big Tom closed the Galtymore in the last week of May 2008 with Auld Lang Syne, fifty six years after it opened, and said afterwards there was nowhere left in London that would pull a crowd. There is a supermarket and ninety odd flats on the site now.
