JUST GOT LOC EXTENSIONS? Save this post. 👑

Fresh loc extensions are still settling, and the added length means added weight on your natural hair and attachment points.

Poor aftercare, especially excessive pulling, movement, tension or handling them while they are heavy and wet, can cause extensions to loosen, slip, weaken at the attachment point or even come off completely.

A beautiful installation is only the beginning. How you care for your locs afterwards plays a huge role in how well they hold, mature and last.

Every installation is different, so always follow the aftercare instructions given specifically for your hair texture, loc size, length and installation method.

Loc education: crochet maintenance does NOT mean your locs need to be flipped through their roots. 🚫

I keep seeing this technique used during loc maintenance, including on hair that is being worked with using a crochet needle.

Passing a loc through its own root can create the holes, bumps and distorted sections you can see in this video. And no, flipping the hair through itself does not automatically mean that the hair has been properly locked.

I personally do not recommend this technique, particularly when I am crocheting a loc. The crochet needle itself allows me to work loose hair into the loc and construct or maintain the loc without creating this unnecessary distortion at the root.

And texture matters. If poor technique can leave visible problems on tightly coiled hair, imagine repeatedly doing it to straight or silky hair, where the locking process already requires careful technique.

Clients: learn about your locs. Ask what technique is being used on you and why. You don’t need to become a loctician, but you should understand what someone is doing to hair you intend to wear for years.
