Laboratory studies have found that compounds found in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), rather than EVOO itself simply acting as a cancer treatment, can kill or inhibit several types of cancer cells grown in the lab.

These compounds—particularly oleocanthal, hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein—have been studied in cancer cell lines including breast, prostate, pancreatic, colorectal, liver, stomach, leukemia, melanoma, lung, thyroid, ovarian, cervical and brain cancers. Different studies tested different compounds, extracts, concentrations and cancer cell lines, so it is not accurate to say that one experiment proved EVOO kills exactly 13 types of cancer.

One of the most studied compounds is oleocanthal, a natural phenolic compound present in extra virgin olive oil.

Laboratory research has shown that oleocanthal can damage the lysosomes, structures inside cells that contain digestive enzymes, causing cancer cells to die. Other olive-oil compounds have been reported to interfere with cancer-cell growth and survival pathways or trigger programmed cell death.
