Happy October✨

Yes, I did a few repairs.

No, I’m not about to make you search for them.

This was my first session with her and a house call to campus. Once everything that needed my attention was handled, she got a fresh retie to finish things off.

And quite frankly, I think we should spend the rest of our time here admiring it.

Imagine your loctician telling you to come back less often.

Yup.

After starting her micro locs, I used those early 4 week reties to observe how her hair was settling. We eventually moved to 6 weeks but even then she wasn’t experiencing slippage and there wasn’t enough loose hair to comfortably complete a proper rotation.

So why force it?

We stretched her maintenance to every 8 weeks and that schedule has been working beautifully for her.

She follows her home care recommendations, keeps her reties consistent and her micro locs have been making beautiful progress because of it.

Good maintenance isn’t about fixing everything you see.

Loose hair, frizz or a change at the root doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong or that it needs to be manipulated.

Part of caring for locs is knowing what you’re looking at, understanding what actually needs attention and knowing when leaving something alone is the better decision.

This photo was taken a little over three years ago, before my very first maintenance session on what is now a VERY familiar head of locs 😂. There was plenty for me to observe before deciding what, if anything, needed intervention.

Because knowing how to repair a loc is valuable. Knowing how to help prevent unnecessary repairs in the first place matters too.

Healthy locs aren’t maintained on autopilot. They’re paid attention to.

I could tell you consistency matters.

Or you could just look at her locs.

Every 8 weeks, I’m back for her house call. And every visit gets to build on the care from the one before it.

That’s the quiet beauty of consistency. You don’t have to wait until something goes wrong to start paying attention.

Sometimes the flex is simply having nothing to fix✨

If it’s time to give your locs that kind of consistency, your next session is waiting through the link in bio.

First session together and naturally, I had questions.

There were a few areas of breakage we could address and a couple that deserved a little more investigation.

After going through the usual suspects (products, maintenance schedule, tension, medication and stress) there wasn’t an obvious change that explained what I was seeing.

At that point? Above my pay grade, respectfully. A visit to the doctor was my recommendation because sometimes what shows up on the scalp and affects the hair deserves a conversation beyond your loctician’s chair.

What was within my jurisdiction? A few repairs and a bomb retwist.

And that part, I handled accordingly 😌

If you’re looking for a loctician who’ll pay attention to what your locs are telling us, including knowing when the answer may not be mine to give, secure your session through the link in bio.

You wouldn’t know by looking at it but there’s no gel in this retwist.

Her scalp doesn’t respond well to gels, so none were used, just peppermint spray and medicated grease.

And as you can see… we didn’t have to sacrifice the finish either. Because the products used should make sense for the person sitting in my chair, not just the finished look.

Sometimes providing a better service simply means knowing when to leave something out.

Her previous session addressed damage caused from incorrect bleaching technique. This visit? An eight-week retie.

Her loose hair has been interlocked to match her existing maintenance.

Good maintenance isn’t always about fixing a problem. Sometimes it’s about making sure we don’t create another one.
