A client recently asked me if my makeup kit was brand new. I said, “No, but why do you ask?” She explained that she’d been somewhere before where everything in the kit was covered in product and looked really unclean.

And honestly, I was taken aback because, no, not everything in my kit is brand new - but I do take very, very good care of it.

I’m meticulous about cleaning and disinfecting everything I use during a session - not just the brushes. Every single thing I touch gets cleaned properly, including the pumps.

Some products do need to be replaced more frequently. Gel liner jars, for example, tend to dry out quickly once the seal is broken. I’m normally only 25–50% of the way through the jar before it’s no longer usable.

Eyeshadows are another example. Over time, regular disinfection can change the way they perform. The pigmentation isn’t the same, the texture changes, and they simply aren’t as easy to blend anymore.

That’s exactly why they often need to be replaced long before they reach their expiry date. It’s not necessarily that the palette has gone bad or is unsafe to use - the performance has changed. If a product isn’t performing to the standard I expect for my clients, I’m not going to keep using it simply because there’s still product left.

This is also something to remember when comparing prices between makeup artists.

When you book with a professional makeup artist, you’re paying for more than just the application. You’re paying for the products, hygiene, sanitation, equipment and ongoing replacement that go into maintaining a professional kit.

So when two artists offer what appears to be the same service at very different prices, it’s worth asking: what are you actually saving on?

Because when it comes to something being applied directly to your skin, is saving a little money really worth compromising on hygiene and safety?
