☀️ Can low vitamin D actually cause hair loss?
Vitamin D gets talked about a lot when it comes to hair loss but the relationship isn’t quite as simple as low vitamin D = hair loss.
Vitamin D receptors are present within hair follicles, and vitamin D signalling plays a role in normal follicle biology and the hair growth cycle.
Research has also found associations between lower vitamin D levels and several types of hair loss.
But this is where we need to be careful.
Finding lower vitamin D levels in people experiencing hair loss doesn’t automatically prove that the deficiency caused it and taking vitamin D isn’t a universal treatment for thinning hair.
If you have male pattern hair loss, for example, correcting a vitamin D deficiency isn’t going to remove the underlying genetic susceptibility of your follicles to androgen driven miniaturisation.
However, if you’re experiencing unexplained or diffuse shedding, nutritional deficiencies may be one of several potential factors worth investigating with an appropriate healthcare professional.
And if you genuinely are vitamin D deficient, correcting that deficiency is important for your overall health as well as supporting normal hair biology.
The important message?
Don’t assume every case of hair loss is DHT but don’t assume every vitamin deficiency is the cause either.
Find out what you’re actually dealing with first.

✖️ Sometimes a hair transplant isn’t about starting from scratch - it’s about correcting what was done the first time.
This client originally had his first hair transplant at a well known clinic in Manchester.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t happy with the result. When he came to me for advice and I assessed what had been done, I could understand why.
We discussed what could realistically be corrected, assessed the donor area that remained available and put together a plan for a second hair transplant with the clinic I work with.
The objective wasn’t simply to add more grafts.
It was to correct the previous work, improve the overall appearance and create a much more natural looking result.
And this is where we are today.
A result both my client and I are incredibly happy with and, most importantly, a hair transplant that doesn’t immediately look like a hair transplant.
Cases like this are also a reminder that your first choice of clinic matters. Repair work is possible in some cases, but you’re working with a finite donor supply and you don’t always get an unlimited number of opportunities to put things right.
Do your research. Understand the plan. Know who’s carrying out your procedure.
Getting it right the first time is always preferable to having to correct it later.
📸 A celebrity had their hair transplant there… so it must be a good clinic, right?
Not necessarily.
Celebrity results can be great marketing for a hair transplant clinic, but there’s something you need to consider before allowing that to influence where you have your procedure.
Some celebrities and influencers may be paid to promote a clinic or receive their procedure free or at a reduced cost in return for exposure.
That doesn’t automatically mean the clinic is bad, and it doesn’t mean their result isn’t genuine.
But it does mean you shouldn’t treat a celebrity endorsement as proof that a clinic is the right choice for you.
Instead, look deeper.
Who will actually be performing your procedure? What experience does the medical team have? How will your donor area be managed? Is the proposed hairline appropriate? What happens if your hair loss progresses? And what support will you receive afterwards?
Choose a hair transplant clinic because you’ve researched the people doing the work — not because you recognise the person in their Instagram post.
A celebrity endorsement is marketing.
Your hair transplant is permanent.

💻 Everything I do with The Hair Loss Guy starts with helping men make better informed decisions about their hair.
And if you’re new to my page, my website is probably the best place to start.
I’ve built it to be more than somewhere that simply lists the services I offer. It’s somewhere you can learn about my background, my experience within the hair loss industry and why I created The Hair Loss Guy in the first place.
You’ll also find information on the different options available for male hair loss, including hair loss treatments, hair transplants in the UK and Istanbul, SMP and other solutions because there isn’t one answer that’s right for every man.
There’s information about how my consultations and hair transplant assessments work, the clinics and specialists I work with, and how I support my clients throughout the process.
I also publish a new blog every week, covering the questions I’m regularly asked about hair loss and hair transplantation - from graft numbers and donor areas to choosing a clinic, medication and what to expect from a procedure.
My aim with the website is simple:
Give men somewhere they can educate themselves before making decisions about their hair.
Because the more you understand, the harder it is to make the wrong decision.

📚 One clinic says you need 2,500 grafts. Another says 4,000. So who’s right?
Getting completely different graft estimates can be confusing, but it doesn’t automatically mean one clinic is wrong.
They may actually be planning two very different hair transplants.
One clinic might be focusing primarily on rebuilding the hairline and frontal area, while another may be proposing coverage through the mid-scalp or crown as well.
The proposed hairline position, size of the recipient area, target density, existing hair and your individual hair characteristics can all influence the number of grafts recommended.
And this is why I don’t believe you should choose a clinic simply because they’ve promised you more grafts.
Your donor supply is limited, and every graft needs to be used intelligently, particularly if your native hair continues to thin and you need another procedure in the future.
So when comparing two assessments, don’t just ask:
“How many grafts am I getting?”
Ask:
Where are they going? What are we trying to achieve? And does this plan make sense for my long term hair loss?
The graft number matters.
But the plan behind that number matters far more.

✖️ A little bit about the person behind The Hair Loss Guy.
I’m Rob, an independent hair loss consultant and hair transplant specialist, and for the past several years I’ve been working within the hair loss and hair restoration industry.
I created The Hair Loss Guy because I saw how difficult it had become for men to know who to trust.
One clinic tells you one thing. Another tells you something completely different. Social media is full of conflicting advice, paid promotions and impressive before and after pictures but very little independent guidance on what might actually be right for you.
That’s where I come in.
I help men understand their hair loss, explore the different options available and create a plan based around their individual situation.
For some, that might involve treatment and preserving their existing hair. For others, it could mean a hair transplant, SMP or another form of hair restoration.
When it comes to hair transplants, I work with carefully selected clinics in both the UK and Istanbul. I personally visit and vet the clinics I work with, meet the medical teams and see how they operate behind the scenes.
I’m also continually studying hair and scalp science because I believe the better my understanding becomes, the better advice I can give the men who come to me.
Just helping men understand their options and make a properly informed decision about their hair.

📘 Can you be losing your hair without noticing any shedding?
Yes and this is something a lot of men misunderstand about male pattern hair loss.
When people think of hair loss, they often imagine finding large amounts of hair in the shower, on their pillow or in their hands.
But male pattern hair loss can progress without dramatic shedding.
In genetically susceptible follicles, androgen signalling, particularly involving DHT can cause a process called miniaturisation.
Over successive hair cycles, those follicles can begin producing hairs that are progressively finer, shorter and less visible.
So rather than suddenly noticing lots of hair falling out, you might gradually notice:
Your hairline doesn’t look quite as strong.
Your scalp is becoming more visible.
Your crown looks thinner under certain lighting.
Your hair doesn’t style the way it used to.
Sometimes comparing photographs taken 6–12 months apart reveals changes you simply wouldn’t notice looking in the mirror every day.
So don’t assume that because you’re not seeing hairs everywhere, your hair isn’t changing.
Hair loss isn’t always about how much hair you’re shedding, sometimes it’s about what each follicle is producing.
📸 A hair transplant clinic can look completely different on a phone compared with what you find when you actually walk through the door.
I recently visited a clinic that, from everything I had seen beforehand, looked promising. In fact, it nearly caught me off guard.
But when I arrived in person, my opinion changed very quickly.
I couldn’t wait to get out of there.
And this is exactly where I think a lot of men can get caught out when researching a hair transplant.
You’re sitting at home scrolling through Instagram, Google and clinic websites. You see impressive before and afters, a professional looking clinic, thousands of followers and a price that seems good.
But none of that necessarily tells you what is actually happening behind the scenes.
Who will perform each stage of your procedure?
How experienced is the team?
What are the medical standards actually like?
Is the clinic giving you the right advice or simply trying to get you booked in?
This experience reinforced exactly why I put so much importance on personally visiting and vetting the clinics I work with.
A hair transplant is permanent. I wouldn’t recommend somewhere to one of my clients purely because it looks good on a mobile phone.
Sometimes you need to walk through the door.

☑️ There’s a lot more to a hair transplant than simply moving hair from one area of the scalp to another.
This is one of the doctors I work closely with at the clinic I work with in Istanbul, carrying out a procedure.
One of the biggest things I’ve learnt from spending time inside hair transplant clinics is just how much the people performing the procedure matter.
Hairline planning, donor management, graft handling, incision placement, angles, distribution and medical oversight all contribute to the eventual result.
It’s also why I put so much importance on knowing who is actually involved in my clients’ procedures rather than simply recommending a clinic based on photographs and results online.
I want to see how a clinic operates.
I want to meet the medical team.
And I want to understand exactly what happens when one of my clients walks through the door.
Because when you’re trusting someone with something as permanent as a hair transplant, the team behind the procedure matters just as much as the name above the clinic.
