Someone asked me recently, “Do you lose the sun on the farm over winter?” And it got me thinking…

Yes, we do lose the direct sun as it disappears behind the hill from mid October, but we’re certainly not in darkness. There are shadows, of course, but there is also the most beautiful golden light.

As the sun slips away for winter, we start to notice a different kind of magic from the farm.

The soft golden glow over the freshly planted fields below. Mist hanging over the lakes in the morning. The clouds catching every colour at sunset. The stillness in the air, and the rich tones of the woodland below us.

We start to see the sunrise again from the house, and the animals come in for winter — bringing with them the comforting sounds of cattle quietly grazing on bales and settling into the barns.

Everything feels a little slower. A little softer. Just the sounds of the wildlife and the farm animals to enjoy. It's bliss.

I love the long, light-filled days of summer, but there is something incredibly special about this view in the colder months too.

Perhaps we don’t really lose the sun after all. We just get to see its light differently. ✨

The view from my window — and the inspiration behind Bergamot, Patchouli & Clary Sage ✨

Mist hanging low over the lakes. Freshly harvested fields and rich, dark soil. Woodland disappearing into the distance, with the early morning sun just beginning to break through.

It’s mornings like this that inspired Bergamot, Patchouli & Clary Sage.

Bright bergamot and sweet orange capture that first warmth of sunlight, while clary sage and marjoram bring a soft, aromatic greenness. Beneath it all, earthy patchouli and frankincense add depth and warmth — grounding the fragrance and giving it that beautiful, lingering richness.

For me, it captures this exact moment in the season. The freshness of a crisp autumn morning, cooling mist over the landscape, freshly turned earth and the changing colours of the countryside as summer quietly gives way to autumn 🍂✨

The rain is tapping at the windows, the wind is rattling through the trees, and suddenly staying in feels like the best plan of all.

Scenting our store this week, pure Island bliss 🏝

Behind the scenes this summer ☀️

It’s been a really busy year — not just at DB HQ, but with farm life x 2, family life, holiday cottage changeovers and all the other projects and responsibilities Matt and I seem to squeeze in between.

Looking back through my camera roll over the last few weeks though, there are so many little moments that I’m really grateful for.

The view from our new farm. A little veggie harvest from the garden — definitely not a bounty year, but gratefully received! Cattle looking incredibly well despite such a dry summer, and now, after the recent rain, the welcome sight of fresh green shoots appearing across the fields 🌱

Willows Cottage Calbourne has been in full summer swing too, so there have been plenty of changeovers squeezed into the mix.

And amongst it all, GCSE results arrived. The next steps are now confirmed and I’m incredibly proud of our eldest — and equally proud of everything the younger two have achieved and thrown themselves into this year too.

It can sometimes feel as though you’re constantly juggling, moving from one thing to the next, and still wondering whether you’ve actually done 'enough'.

Then you scroll back through your camera roll and realise just how much life has happened in those weeks.

Lots of hard work, lots of change, lots of products made, plenty of dusty boots and probably not enough hours in the day — but so much to be grateful for.

And next week, as summer begins to gently shift, we’ll start bringing a little more cosiness back into our Ryde flagship store. 🍂
