This patient had a painful skin lesion that had been growing for around 6 weeks. It was diagnosed as a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

I’ll share more details about this case in tomorrow’s reel. 👀

What were these raised lesions in the armpit?

This patient had several pedunculated lesions in the axilla (armpit) — raised lesions attached to the skin by a narrow base.

On assessment, they were identified as seborrhoeic keratoses, which are common benign skin lesions.

Because raised lesions in the armpit can catch on clothing and become irritated, removal may be considered when appropriate.

Why is BCC — basal cell carcinoma — dangerous?🥼

BCC rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but if left untreated, it can grow into surrounding tissue and cause significant local damage.

This is particularly important when it develops on areas such as the nose, eyelid or ear, where treatment can become more complex.

The good news? Early treatment is usually highly successful.

Seborrhoeic keratosis shave excision 🥼

Before and after photos showing the removal of seborrhoeic keratoses from this lady’s upper lip.

The area has healed very well, with minimal visible scarring.

Every procedure is planned carefully, especially when treating a visible area such as the face.

I recently removed a BCC (basal cell carcinoma) from a patient’s nose, and I’ve broken the case down into two videos.

In the first video, I talk you through the assessment and the type of skin cancer.

Stay tuned for part two, where I’ll show you how I reconstructed the area after removing the BCC.

Intradermal naevus on the cheek 🩺🥼

An intradermal naevus is a common benign type of mole that often appears as a raised, skin-coloured or slightly pigmented bump.

Because these lesions can be quite prominent on the face, some patients choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.

In suitable cases, a shave excision can be used to remove the raised part of the lesion without the need for stitches. The tissue can then be sent for histological examination to confirm the diagnosis.

What the dermatoscope couldn’t tell me…

A dermatoscope is an incredibly useful tool for examining skin lesions, but it doesn’t always give us a definitive diagnosis.

Sometimes a lesion can look suspicious, yet its true nature can only be confirmed by removing it and examining the tissue under a microscope (histology).

That’s why clinical assessment, dermoscopy and, when appropriate, histology all have an important role in diagnosing skin lesions.

Massage cream for post-procedure care

Post-procedure massage can be an important part of aftercare for some treatments, but it should only be done when appropriate and at the right stage of healing.

I use a suitable massage cream to help reduce friction and make the massage more comfortable, while supporting gentle aftercare of the treated area.
