This week, Chloe and Julie attended the fourth General Assembly of the EU-funded DTO-BioFlow project in Ostend, Belgium. πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ

DTO-BioFlow is helping to build a digital twin of the ocean, combining marine observations, models and digital technologies to explore "what if" scenarios and support better conservation, management and policy decisions.

DASSH has played a key role in the work to unlock "sleeping" biodiversity data, identifying 303 previously inaccessible datasets and helping mobilise major citizen science records from iNaturalist, eBird and Observation.org. These records have now been aligned with WoRMS taxonomy allowing DASSH to create marine subsets, increasing their accessibility and impact.

We wish Chloe and Julie safe travels. One last thing, Belgium is famous for its chocolate, and the team will be expecting evidence of this upon their return. πŸ˜‰

Dr Bryce Stewart vs Sebastien Lowe octopus bloom or invasion? Over the last 18 months, octopus numbers off the south coast of the UK have surged.

The Marine Biological Association recently released new findings from the second major scientific study documenting the unprecedented bloom of common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) off the southwest coast of the UK since 2025. The event is the largest recorded in at least 75 years and according to researchers is likely linked to warming seas and wider changes in the marine environment.

The Little Book of Whales by Robert Young & Annalisa Berta

The Little Book of Whales is an attractive, accessible overview of whale biology, diversity, and cultural significance, aimed primarily at natural history enthusiasts. It works best as a 'coffee table science' book, offering a broad introduction supported by strong visuals.

One of the book's major strengths is its illustrations. High-quality drawings and photographs are used throughout and often help clarify topics such as anatomy, species diversity, and behaviour. The visual presentation makes the book engaging and enjoyable to browse.

The book covers a wide range of topics, including evolution, feeding strategies, communication and conservation. A particularly welcome feature is the inclusion of a section on folklore and myths, which is not commonly found in marine mammal literature and adds valuable cultural context.
