What were these raised lesions in the armpit?

This patient had several pedunculated lesions in the axilla (armpit) — raised lesions attached to the skin by a narrow base.

On assessment, they were identified as seborrhoeic keratoses, which are common benign skin lesions.

Because raised lesions in the armpit can catch on clothing and become irritated, removal may be considered when appropriate.

Formal mole excision was performed following clinical assessment 💉

The mole was completely removed with a small margin of surrounding skin, and the specimen was sent for histological examination.

This photo shows the result 4 months after surgery. The scar is healing well and will continue to soften and fade over time.

Can a lipoma grow back after removal?

Usually, a lipoma that has been completely removed does not come back in the same spot.

However, another lipoma can develop in the same area or elsewhere, particularly in people who are prone to developing multiple lipomas.

What can 9 months of healing look like?

This is a vascular lesion before removal — a change caused by abnormal or enlarged blood vessels, which can appear red, purple or blue.

For some lesions, surgical removal may be an option, depending on the diagnosis, size and location.

Here you can see the before and 9-month result, showing not only the removal but how the scar has matured over time.

BCC or SCC — what’s the difference?

Both are common types of non-melanoma skin cancer, and both are strongly linked to UV exposure. But they behave differently.

BCC — Basal Cell Carcinoma
Usually grows slowly and very rarely spreads to other parts of the body. It can look like a pearly or shiny lump, a sore that doesn’t heal, or a scab that repeatedly bleeds. However, if left untreated, it can cause significant local tissue damage.

SCC — Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Often grows more quickly than BCC. It may appear as a rough, scaly or crusted lump, sometimes becoming sore, bleeding or ulcerated. Unlike BCC, SCC can spread, although most cases are successfully treated when diagnosed early.

So, although both can appear on sun-exposed skin, they are not the same cancer and shouldn’t be treated as if they are.

If you notice a skin lesion that is new, changing, bleeding or not healing, get it assessed rather than waiting for it to disappear.
