Funky Doos

You cannot fix a purple by putting another purple on top of it.

Laura's wedding hair was built over a few visits, not one. Last time she was in, Katy put in a blue-based purple. Laura loved it — genuinely loved it. It just didn't sit right next to the dress. And the dress was a pink-based purple.

Two purples. Completely different jobs.

Here's the bit people get wrong. The instinct is to go over the top with the warmer one and let it win. It doesn't win. Layer a pink-based violet onto a blue-based violet and what comes back is the blue-based violet, only muddier. The cool pigment is already sitting in the hair. Adding warmth on top doesn't remove it — it just puts something else in front of it.

So the blue had to come out before the pink could go in.

And you don't lift it out. Not on a bride. Vivid violets are direct dyes and they don't lift clean — they grab, they go patchy, and you spend hair condition you can't get back when there's a date already in the diary.

You wash it out. Hot, deliberately, over weeks. The heat opens the cuticle and lets the direct dye release, and you keep going until enough of the blue has gone that the hair will take a warm violet honestly instead of arguing with it.

Then depth back through the length. Then the pink-based purple, placed underneath and through the front.

Then the wedding.

The colour you can see took an afternoon. The colour you can't see took a month.

If you've got a vivid that won't shift, or one that won't sit right on top of what's already in there — that's the conversation. Bring it.

She booked in for a colour. What she needed was a cut.

The brief came in as orange or blue — couldn't decide between them — and it had to last.

Then the inspo pics arrived. Four of them. Four different colours.

One haircut.

That's the whole diagnosis sitting right there. When the colour changes in every photo and the shape doesn't, the colour isn't the thing being fallen in love with. The shape is. The vivid is just what happened to be sitting on it.

So that's where Katy started. The grow-out was chunky — hard blonde against a dark base, no blend, and the length sitting in one heavy block with nothing to move it. Any vivid dropped onto that would have landed in stripes and gone muddy at the join inside a fortnight.

So she highlighted it properly instead. Lightened through and blended, so the contrast reads lived-in rather than stripey. Then the shape: s**g through the top and sides, curtain fringe, layers disconnected enough to actually move, tail left soft at the back.

No orange. No blue.

A haircut and a set of highlights — and she walked out with the thing she was actually asking for in all four of those photos.

The consultation is the skill. The colour's the easy bit.

Part three of Katy's masterclass — and this one contradicts everything we've told you so far. 🔴

This is Chelsea. First ever visit to Funky-Doos, first time in Katy's chair, and she walked straight in for the lot: dark root, red through the mids, dark flicky tips.

Right, colour theory 👇

Robyn's green needed a clean, cool yellow and hated warmth. Karen's berry lived on it. Chelsea's red? Red is warmth's best pal. It's the one bold colour that doesn't need you lifted anywhere near blonde — you take the base up to a warm orange-gold and you stop there. Less time in the chair, far less stress on the hair, and a red that actually reads as red instead of drifting pink.

Two things Katy did on purpose that most folk miss:

1. The dark root is deliberate. That's not a shortcut, it's engineering. There's no hard line where colour meets regrowth — so Chelsea can go months without a root panic and it'll just look like it was always meant to be that way.

2. The dark tips are the clever bit. Bracket a bright colour with depth top and bottom and the red looks brighter. Your eye judges a colour by what's sitting next to it, and against dark, red turns the volume up. Then on a flicky cut, every single flick throws out a flash of dark against the red. The cut and the colour are doing the same job.

One honest bit: red fades faster than any other colour going. Cold rinses, a colour-safe shampoo and a colour-depositing conditioner will keep it screaming for weeks longer — Katy will tell you exactly what to use before you leave.

Same day. Same family. Opposite side of the colour wheel.

An hour after Robyn left, her mum Karen sat down in Katy's chair. Mother and daughter, funky colour, same Saturday. Doesn't get much better than that. 💚💜

Karen went a completely different direction — a muted green melting down into a deep berry purple. And when Katy blow-dried it out, everybody in the salon said the same word at the same time: dragon fruit. 🐉

So here's part two of Katy's colour theory masterclass 👇

Robyn's green and yellow were neighbours on the colour wheel — neighbours get along. Green and berry are opposites. Put opposites next to each other carelessly and they cancel each other out. You get a muddy brown band straight through the middle, and that's the single most common way a two-tone colour goes wrong.

Two things stopped that happening.

1. The green had to be muted, not vivid. A screaming lime next to a berry is a fight. A soft, dusty green next to a berry is a contrast. Same two colours — completely different result. It's all in the saturation.

2. Katy travelled round the wheel, not across it. The green doesn't crash into the berry. It goes through teal and violet on the way down. That transition is the blend zone, and that's where every bit of the skill lives.

And here's the bit we're proudest of. Karen came in with a lot of warmth through her lengths — that gingery copper. Warmth is green's worst enemy... but it's berry's best pal. So the berry went where the warmth already was, and the green went up top where the canvas was cleanest.

Working with the hair in front of you instead of fighting it. That's the whole job. 🐉

And we're back with this one. Robyn came in with an inspo pic — green with yellow running through it — and Katy delivered it. Not "a version of it." It.

So here's a wee colour theory masterclass from Katy 👇

Green is the one vivid that lives on yellow. Blue pigment + the yellow already sitting in lifted hair = green. So the job was never to chase white-blonde — it was getting Robyn's base to a clean, even yellow and stopping right there.

That bit matters, because green's opposite on the colour wheel is red. Leave any orange or red hiding in the mid-lengths and your green goes to mud. Honestly? 90% of this result happened before a drop of green went near her hair.

And the yellow ribbons — they're not a colour we added on top. They're where Katy stopped. Yellow and green are neighbours on the wheel, and neighbours harmonise where opposites cancel. So those ribbons read as light through the green instead of fighting it. Then a deeper green shadow at the root, so the lime reads like sunshine hitting it.

That's the whole trick. Prep, placement, and knowing where to stop.

Meet Maddy's Opal Unicorn Melt 🦄✨

Before: gorgeous hair, just tired and ready for something big.

Katy started by lifting sections through with Joico Blonde Life — building a clean, even canvas exactly where the colour needed somewhere bright to land.

Then came the fun part: four custom-mixed shades — Blast Tickled Pink, Glow Stick, Traffic Cone and Mermaid — hand-painted in and melted into each other so there's no hard line anywhere, just one colour bleeding into the next.

The clever bit? Every one of those tones was chosen to light up under UV. Maddy and Ellisa are heading to Creamfields next weekend, and when the blacklights hit, this hair is going to be doing as much dancing as she is. 🌈💡

This is what happens when "can you do something fun with my hair" gets taken literally.

💚🩵💜 **COLOUR CHANGE DAY AT FUNKYDOOS** 💜🩵💚

Now THIS is a transformation. 😍🔥

For today’s client, Katy was changing up the existing colour completely and creating this bold **three-colour funky melt**.

Katy started by applying bleach with 20 vol through the mids and ends and left that to lift for 20 minutes. She then went back in and applied to the roots, leaving everything to process for a further 25 minutes to create the canvas needed for the new colours.

Then came the fun part… 🎨

💚 **Neon green at the roots**
🩵 melted into **teal through the mids**
💜 then blended into **purple through the lengths and ends**

The whole thing was blended so each colour flowed into the next without any harsh lines.

And to finish it all off, Katy created a fresh **wolf cut**, adding loads of texture and movement so the different colours really show from every angle. 🔥

🖤 WHEN BLONDE ISN’T BLONDE ENOUGH… ADD BLACK. 🤍

One of Katy’s clients from last week wanted to take her blonde even blonder, but with a funky twist — black ends without that harsh straight line between the two colours. 😍

Katy started by evening out the blonde canvas, getting everything sitting where she wanted it before moving onto a bit of Katy colour theory to custom mix the perfect blonde tone. ✨

Then came the black. 🖤

Rather than simply painting a solid band around the ends, Katy carefully broke small pieces of black upwards into the blonde, creating that scattered, dimensional transition you can see through the finished hair. No chunky hard line — just blonde melting into those seriously striking black ends.

And because all that dimension deserved to be seen, Katy finished everything with a loose wave, letting the different blonde tones and black detailing move through the hair perfectly.

From a blonde that needed evening out ➡️ bright, dimensional blonde with a seriously funky black finish.

This is exactly why a funky colour doesn’t always have to mean rainbow hair. Sometimes two colours and clever placement are more than enough. 🖤🤍

Alana was back with Katy yesterday for her 8-week red refresh — and before Katy even touched it, we had to get a photo. 👀🔥

LOOK AT THAT BEFORE!

Eight weeks since her last colour and that red was still holding strong. The only thing really giving the game away was the new root growth. 😂

For Alana's refresh, Katy started by bleaching up the new rootage, carefully preparing only what actually needed lifted. She then mixed up Alana's custom red and got those roots firmly put back in their place. ❤️🔥

Over the last few weeks, we’ve had a few people trying to negotiate the cost of their hair, so we need to make this clear:

Our listed prices are not our first offer in a negotiation. They are the prices our services start from, based on the time, products, preparation and skill involved.

🌈 **FUNKY COLOUR BOOKINGS**

If it has been 8 weeks or longer since your funky colour appointment, you will need to book the full service again:

One colour → Funky One Colour
Two colours → Funky Two Colour
Three colours → Funky Three Colour

After 8 weeks, there is usually enough regrowth that the roots need lightened and prepared again.

If you return within 8 weeks, have very little regrowth and do not need any new bleaching, you may be suitable for a Funky Refresh. This simply freshens up your existing colour when the freezing-cold, once-a-week washes haven’t quite kept it vibrant! 🥶😂

A refresh does not include root bleaching, a new colour design or changing the number of colours.

📱 **MESSAGES AFTER 8PM**

From today, we will not be available on social media after 8pm.

This follows someone bombarding us with messages at 12:40am trying to get their hair cheaper, then becoming rude and abusive when told the price was the price.

We were then told we should improve Funky Doos’ fixtures and fittings before charging our prices. We have always been completely open that our new salon is being rebuilt and improved in phases.

The stage of our renovation does not reduce the cost of professional products, insurance, electricity, training, preparation, appointment time or Katy’s skill.

Funky Doos is run and operated by a 24-year-old woman working incredibly hard to build her career and create something special. She deserves basic respect.

We understand everyone has a budget, and there is no judgement if an appointment is not affordable. We can discuss a simpler option or longer-term plan.

What we will not accept is haggling, abuse or belittling the salon because someone has been told no.

**Our prices are our prices — not the opening round of negotiations.** 💚
