That sudden shift into autumn can feel like a bit of a shock to the system.

One week it’s warm and bright, the next there’s a chill in the air, darker evenings and a definite sense that the season has turned.

In Chinese medicine, autumn is associated with the Metal element and a movement inwards. It can be a useful time to respond to that change rather than trying to keep living at a summer pace.

A few simple things can help: keeping warm as temperatures drop, choosing more cooked and nourishing foods, and allowing your routines to become a little slower and steadier.

Seasonal changes are part of life, but sometimes our bodies need a little time to catch up.

The autumn equinox marks a moment of balance between day and night, and a clear turning towards the darker, quieter half of the year.

After such a hot and fiery summer, followed by the dense, abundant feeling of late summer and the Earth element, autumn can feel like quite a change of pace.

In Chinese medicine, autumn belongs to the Metal element.

Where Fire is expansive and expressive, and Earth is associated with nourishment and abundance, Metal has a more pared-back quality. It is traditionally connected with clarity, boundaries, breath and letting go.

The Lung and Large Intestine are associated with Metal in Chinese medicine, as are the emotions of grief and release. At this time of year, the natural world offers a very visible version of that process: leaves begin to fall, growth slows, and energy starts to move inwards.

It can be a useful season to ask: what still feels important? What can be simplified? What are we holding onto that we might be ready to release?

After so much heat, movement and outward energy, autumn offers a different rhythm. Not necessarily a dramatic one, but perhaps a little more space to pause, breathe and notice what is changing.

Seasonal thinking is an important part of Chinese medicine, and we enjoy noticing how these ideas can give us another way of understanding the transitions we experience through the year.

When you’re having acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine, it can be easy to focus on how you feel immediately before or after an appointment.

But change is not always that obvious.

Sometimes you notice it a few days later: perhaps you’re sleeping better, feeling less tense, your digestion has shifted, your energy feels different, or something that was bothering you simply isn’t taking up quite as much space.

Paying attention to what happens between appointments can help you notice patterns and changes that are otherwise easy to miss in the middle of everyday life.

We’ve written a new blog about this, looking at why it can be helpful to notice both the obvious and the more subtle changes over time.

How do you take Chinese herbal medicine?

Herbs can be prescribed in a number of different forms, depending on the individual prescription. These can include a decoction, where herbs are simmered in water to make a liquid, as well as herbal powders and pills.

If you’re prescribed Chinese herbal medicine, your practitioner will explain exactly how your herbs should be prepared and taken.

For anyone using herbs that need to be prepared at home, we also have a step-by-step guide on our website to help make the process clear and manageable.

Client love like this reminds us why we do what we do! 💚

A calm, welcoming space and thoughtful acupuncture treatments can make a real difference over time. Our practitioners focus on creating sessions where you can properly switch off, feel supported, and allow your body to respond at its own pace.

Acupuncture isn’t just about addressing symptoms. It’s about working with the whole person, supporting balance, and helping the nervous system settle so real change can happen.

We’re always grateful when clients share their experiences, and we’re proud to offer a space in central Oxford that feels warm, quiet and restorative.

As we move through late summer, Chinese medicine describes this as the season of the Earth element. After the outward expansion of summer’s Fire energy, Earth brings us back towards centre.

It is the energy of nourishment, stability and groundedness. The pause between the fullness of summer and the letting go of autumn.

You can feel that shift at this time of year.

Golden light. Ripening fruit. Slower evenings. A sense of gathering in.

In Chinese medicine, the Earth element is closely connected with digestion, care, routine and feeling held. It reminds us to return to the simple things that support us: regular meals, warm nourishing food, time to rest, and moments that help us feel steady.

Late summer can be a beautiful time to notice what has sustained you through the busier, brighter months. It can also be a good moment to gently reset before the pace changes again in autumn.

Living in Oxford, we’re lucky to have so many places that offer that sense of groundedness — allotments, markets, meadows, riverside walks, quiet gardens and familiar streets glowing in late summer light.

Whether it’s picking up seasonal vegetables at the Covered Market, walking slowly through Christ Church Meadow, sitting by the river at Port Meadow, or making a simple meal at home after a long day, these small acts of nourishment matter.

In Chinese medicine, health is not separate from the seasons. The way we eat, rest, move and connect with our surroundings can all help us feel more balanced.

What helps you feel grounded as summer begins to soften into autumn?
