Dear Diary,

Nobody tells you that you will grieve a version of your life that never actually existed.

Not a real loss. Nothing you can point to. Just the quiet disappearance of the version of parenting you had imagined before you knew what yours would really look like.

I thought about it today watching her sleep.

I thought about the parents who wake up on a Saturday and just — go somewhere. No bag packed with safe products. No checking the weather to see if the heat will trigger a flare. No mental calculation of every variable before the day has even started. They just go. The day unfolds. They come home.

I love being her mother. I need to say that first and clearly.

But I am allowed to also hold the other thing. The version of easy I did not get. The spontaneity that was quietly replaced by preparation. The carefree that became careful. The mornings I wanted to just be present and instead found myself already three steps ahead managing something invisible to everyone but me.

Grief does not always arrive loudly.

Many times its a version of simple that you watch other people have and feel the distance of without quite having the words for it.

This is love too. I know that. I feel that completely.

It is just heavier than I expected. And some days the weight of it is allowed to be felt.
