✨ Acne Scar Reduction ✨

This Acne Awareness Month I wanted to share one of my lovely patients who came to me for help in improving her acne scarring.

Scars can be incredibly difficult to treat; dependant on the age and structure of the scar. They usually will require a unique, combination treatment approach and regular maintenance to improve their appearance and treat the acne condition itself.

▪️ How it affects the skin:
Inflammatory and severe acne can be caused by excessive oil production and trapping bacteria within the pores, leading to pustules/papules that can be red/swollen/tender. Some cysts, like boils are deep, very painful and carry the highest risk of scarring as it destroys the collagen in the skin, which can make the skin dip inwards or be raised.

▪️ What we treated:
Boxcar acne scarring - depressions in the skin, most commonly seen on cheeks and temples.

Rolling acne scarring - shallow, wide depressions caused by fibrous bands pulling the skin downward, resulting in an uneven texture.

▪️ What we used:
▫️ 3 sessions of Polynucleotides with needle and cannula with subcision to untether the skin.
▫️ 3 Microneedling sessions to induct collagen production building and restructuring of the skin.

Maintenance treatments for acne scarring are recommended alongside a consistent skincare routine targeting oiliness and congestion to manage flare ups and prevent further scarring as well as increasing skin cell turnover.

Not every treatment is straight forward. ❌

Check your skin, regularly. If something’s new or changed, get it looked at. Even if you’ve had it assessed before and told it’s ’nothing to worry about’ - just like this lovely patient of mine.

If it’s nothing, happy days and peace of mind.
If it is something sinister, the earlier it’s treated the better the outcomes.

Sun (UV) damage is cumulative. Exposure builds up over a lifetime. Skin cancer risk is increased.

But that doesn’t mean that only older people get skin cancer.

This lady was 49. Not a ‘sun worshipper’ and yet had been told her skin cancer (Basal Cell Carcinoma) was likely caused by sun exposure.

It has presented on her right cheek; most probably from daily exposure from her car window whilst driving and not wearing any sun protection.

Skin cancer doesn’t always look scary.
It doesn’t always itch, crust or bleed.
It doesn’t care if you never burn.
It doesn’t discriminate.

This is just another real reminder to WEAR YOUR SPF.
