The Beighton Score

This is the standard scoring system used to assess generalised joint hypermobility, but it’s important to understand that hypermobility is about so much more than a number.

The Beighton score looks at a small number of joints and movements. It doesn’t tell us about pain, fatigue, instability, recurrent injuries, proprioception, autonomic symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, headaches, pelvic health, or the many other ways hypermobility can affect someone.
Someone can have significant symptoms and still not score highly on the Beighton scale.
This is why, when looking at HSD or EDS, the Beighton score should be one piece of the puzzle, not the whole puzzle.

Because if we use a simple flexibility score to decide whether someone’s symptoms are “real” or clinically relevant, we risk missing the person sitting in front of us.

The number may matter, but the person matters more.

A little life lately 😁

Some clinic days, some behind-the-scenes bits, and a few things that have made their way into my camera roll recently. Thank you to everyone who’s helped and supported me throughout ❤️

Basically, a little snapshot of work life at the moment.

Bonus picture at the end❤️

Do you need to be injured to see an osteopath?

Not at all!

Osteopathy isn’t just about treating injuries. It can also be about understanding how your body moves, adapts and responds to everyday life.

You don’t have to wait until something hurts to start paying attention to your body.

Your nervous system is listening to EVERYTHING.

Stress, sleep, pain, movement, emotions and even our environment can all influence how our body feels and responds.

This is why the nervous system is such an important part of my approach to osteopathy — because sometimes it’s about looking beyond where you feel the pain and understanding what else might be influencing it.
