We followed Familiar Blue all summer.
From London to the South East coast, across to Berlin and back again. Through watercolour and cyanotype, coastal walks and our Water Lab at Selfridges, we explored the different ways water shapes the places and moments around us.
Beyond the digital, cyanotype returns image-making to its most elemental form: light, water and time.
For artist Marina Longo, water is both material and collaborator. It reveals each image, draws out its blue and shapes the finished work.
We spent the day with Marina to understand her relationship with water, and how it continues to shape the way she works.

We instinctively picture water as blue. Not because it is, but because we’ve learned to associate blue with clarity, calm and cleanliness.
Familiar Blue explores the tension between what water is and how we imagine it. At .berlin , we invited people to paint that feeling rather than the object itself.
Sometimes seeing your water differently starts by questioning what feels familiar.
