Orca pods meeting in a remarkable ocean greeting.

After receiving a call from another boat reporting Orca outside the reef, we turned the tour around and headed toward the last place they were seen. We were hoping to catch a glimpse of these incredible predators, but nothing could have prepared us for what followed.

We initially watched two Orca from a distance as they slowly tracked south. As they moved closer, we were fortunate to witness a couple of close passes, allowing us to identify them as Pimp (N05) and Spinner (N10).

Without warning, they suddenly turned north and began surging, reaching speeds of more than 12 knots. We followed behind, expecting that there may be other Orca ahead or perhaps signs of a humpback whale under pressure, but the ocean appeared empty.

After about a 9km run, the pair began to slow and we prepared to turn back towards home, satisfied that if a predation was going to take place, we would have seen signs of humpbacks… Then we spotted a third Orca in the distance - Jigsaw (N04).

What happened next unfolded in seconds.

A humpback mother and calf surfaced seemingly out of nowhere directly in front of our boat. Almost instantly, Spinner charged and struck the mother as she attempted to shield her calf, while the other Orca moved in to join the attack.

Experiences like this are a powerful reminder of why Orca sit at the very top of the ocean’s food chain. Their intelligence, coordination, speed and strength are nothing short of extraordinary.

Although events like this can be confronting to watch, they are a brutal reminder of the cycle of life. Everything in the ocean needs to eat, and nothing is wasted. As difficult as it can be to witness, this is nature in its rawest form.
