For centuries, when the streets of Kandy fill with drums, dancers, elephants and light, Sri Lanka’s history comes alive before the world. The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the island’s most important religious and cultural celebrations, held in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha and traditionally associated with blessings for rain and a prosperous harvest. What began more than 1,600 years ago has evolved through generations into a remarkable expression of Sri Lankan faith and culture. At the centre of the procession is the sacred casket representing the Tooth Relic, carried by the majestic Maligawa Tusker, surrounded by traditional dancers, drummers and performers. Yet the Perahera is more than a magnificent spectacle. It brings together centuries of Buddhist devotion, traditional arts and the cultural heritage of Kandy in one extraordinary celebration. For those watching from the streets, it is a breathtaking sight. For Sri Lanka, it is something far deeper...  a living tradition that continues to carry the island’s history into the present.
