“My skin always looks amazing after a facial… I just wish it stayed like that.”
I hear versions of this all the time.
And it highlights an important difference between creating a temporary visible effect and working towards longer-term improvement in skin function.
A facial can leave skin looking beautifully hydrated, smoother, fresher and more radiant.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting that.
But when we’re working towards changes in barrier resilience, pigmentation, texture, firmness or overall skin health, we’re often asking biology to do something that takes longer than one appointment.
Which means what happens after the treatment matters too.
Recovery.
Homecare.
Treatment spacing.
Lifestyle.
Protecting the skin from unnecessary irritation.
And knowing when to stimulate again.
That’s why I don’t believe in throwing treatment after treatment at skin simply because we can.
More intervention isn’t automatically more progress.
My approach is to work out what response we’re trying to create, support the skin through that response, and then decide what comes next.
And sometimes I look beyond the face.
That’s why Compression Reset sits at the heart of my September Repair + Recovery approach, supporting circulation and lymphatic movement when that’s appropriate for the client.
Your facial is one part of the picture.
The plan is where the change happens.

If you’re spending money on treatments but feel like you’re constantly ending up back at square one:
DM me PLAN + tell me the ONE thing you’d most like to change about your skin.
You don’t need to choose the treatment.
That’s my job.
Has your face suddenly started looking puffier in your 40s?
It isn’t always weight gain, and it doesn’t automatically mean you need a “lifting” treatment.
During perimenopause and menopause, hormonal fluctuations can influence fluid regulation, vascular function and the way our tissues behave. Sleep, stress, heat, movement, diet and other factors can also contribute.
And sometimes that extra puffiness can make the face look heavier, less defined or simply different.
This is why I don’t look at a changing face and immediately think:
How do we lift it?
I want to understand what’s actually contributing to the change first.
For some clients, that means incorporating facial and lymphatic techniques, neck work and whole-body compression to support circulation and lymphatic movement.
For others, the treatment pathway will be completely different.
Because hormonal skin isn’t one skin type.
Before we treat what you can see, we need to understand what may be creating it.
That’s the difference between choosing a treatment and creating a treatment plan.

If your skin or face has changed and you don’t know where to start, DM me CHANGED and tell me what’s bothering you most.
Has your skin stopped bouncing back like it used to?
Hormonal changes through perimenopause and menopause can influence hydration, barrier function, collagen, elasticity and skin repair.
Which is why my approach isn’t automatically to add stronger actives or more aggressive treatments.
Sometimes skin needs better conditions for recovery before greater stimulation.
That’s how I approach hormonal skin at The Skin Savant.
Repair before you rebuild.

Why can skin suddenly become drier, less resilient or slower to recover during hormonal change?
Because oestrogen does far more in skin than most women realise.
Skin contains oestrogen receptors, and changing oestrogen levels through perimenopause and menopause can influence collagen, hydration, barrier function, elasticity, vascular function and wound healing.
Which means I don’t think it’s enough to look at hormonal skin and ask:
“What can I use to make more collagen?”
I also want to know:
What environment are those skin cells trying to function within?
Because repair isn’t passive.
Skin has to produce lipids and proteins, maintain its barrier, renew cells and respond to everyday environmental stress.
All of that requires normal cellular function and energy.
So if I see skin that’s dehydrated, reactive or struggling with its barrier, I don’t automatically respond by creating more demand with stronger acids or greater stimulation.
Sometimes I want to improve the conditions first.
Hydration.
Barrier support.
Appropriate oxygenation and circulation.
Reducing unnecessary irritation.
Supporting recovery.
Then we decide what comes next.
Because the goal isn’t to make hormonal skin work harder.
It’s to help it work well for longer.
Repair before you rebuild.

“Why am I suddenly so puffy?”
It’s something I hear increasingly from women in their 40s and 50s.
And when it’s fluctuating, particularly around the eyes, lower face and jaw, I don’t automatically see it as an ageing or “lifting” problem.
Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can influence fluid regulation and vascular function. Then sleep, stress, heat, alcohol, salt intake, movement and other factors can all affect how puffy we look and feel on a particular day.
So before deciding what your face needs, I want to understand what I’m actually looking at.
If fluid movement, facial tension and puffiness are part of the picture, I may incorporate lymphatic techniques, facial sculpting, neck and décolleté work through my Holistic Reset, rather than immediately reaching for greater stimulation.
And this is also where Compression Reset / Pressotherapy can beautifully complement a facial treatment, supporting circulation and lymphatic movement through the body while I work on the face.
Sometimes what looks like a lifting problem doesn’t need lifting first.
It needs understanding.
Repair before you rebuild.

Perimenopause skin can feel like someone changed the rules without telling you.
Dryness. Dehydration. Puffiness. Sensitivity. Loss of firmness. Changes in texture. A complexion that suddenly looks more tired.
And the frustrating part?
The skincare that always worked may no longer feel like enough.
Hormonal changes can affect collagen, elasticity, hydration, barrier function, sebum and skin repair.
But that doesn’t mean every woman in perimenopause needs the same treatment.
At The Skin Savant Liverpool, I look at what your skin is doing now, what may be influencing it and what it needs before deciding how to treat it.
Sometimes we repair.
Sometimes we replenish.
Sometimes we support cellular function.
Sometimes we stimulate.
And sometimes the best decision is not to stimulate yet.
You don’t need to choose your treatment before coming to me.
Tell me what has changed. That’s where we’ll start.

If you’ve ever wondered why I spend so much of your facial working around your neck, shoulders and décolletage… there is a reason.
I don’t treat your face as though it’s an isolated piece of skin.
Your face contains an extensive network of lymphatic vessels. Fluid from the facial tissues ultimately drains through lymphatic pathways towards the deeper lymphatic system around the neck.
And unlike your circulation, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a heart continuously pumping it around the body.
It relies partly on things such as movement, muscle contraction and breathing to help lymph move.
Which is why, when appropriate, facial massage doesn’t have to begin and end at your jawline.
Before I think about moving fluid through the face, I think about the pathways it needs to move towards.
That’s why you’ll often feel me working:
Neck.
Décolletage.
Shoulders.
Then face.
And no, the neck massage isn’t something I’ve thrown in because your mask needs ten minutes. 😂
There is intention behind the order.
It’s also part of a much bigger philosophy behind the way I work.
I don’t just look at the thing bothering you in the mirror and attack it.
I look at the skin.
The structures underneath it.
The systems influencing it.
And what your skin may actually need from me that day.
Because your face doesn’t exist separately from your body.
So I don’t believe it should be treated as though it does.
