In Thorne, only 50% of women attend their breast screening appointments when invited.
The second lowest in Doncaster😲
But why? Well, we asked.
Main reasons for not attending screenings involved unsuitable appointment times, travel & transport issues, work or other commitments, location of screening sites, worry or fear of the result, and pain or discomfort.
So what can we do to help?🤔
This Friday, we're bringing together a wide range of local services, charities and businesses to support residents at every stage of their journey.
Whether you're looking to learn more about breast screening, seeking reassurance and information, or navigating a recent cancer diagnosis, you'll find advice, support and friendly faces all under one roof.
Thorne Pink Together is for everyone. Join us in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where the community can come together, access support, share experiences and help one another thrive🩷

It’s .
5 -10% of cancers are caused by genetic ‘mutations’ or ‘alterations’ like the BRCA gene (particularly increasing the risk of breast and ovarian cancers) and Lynch Syndrome (particularly increasing the risk of colorectal cancers).
In simple terms, these mutations mean that a person has less protection against cancer because the repair processes in the body are faulty – it’s not the cancer itself that is hereditary, but changes in the genes that protect and manage how our cells behave.
Not everyone with these gene alterations will develop cancer, but knowing about them can help manage risk with regular screenings, and in some cases preventative surgery.
There is a 50% chance of these genetic alterations passing down to children. Knowing this can be difficult, but also life-saving. We know so much more about cancer “running in families” now, and there is support, guidance and treatment available.
Earlier this year, the NHS announced the National Inherited Cancer Predisposition Register – a new programme for people at higher risk of developing cancer due to inherited faulty genes. They will be regularly checked and tracked by the NHS in a first-of-its-kind national genetics programme.
If you’re dealing with hereditary cancer in your family and need information and support, you can use Cancer Care Map’s homepage to search using your postcode or keywords like ‘hereditary’. Here are a few examples of the kind of support you’ll find:
National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline – provides support to anyone with an increased risk of developing breast cancer. It can provide clinical advice on all the options available to you and full support regardless of what that choice is.
BRCA Chat – Charity supporting people who carry any genetic alteration that predisposes them to cancer. The + in their name, BRCA+ Chat, is for all the other gene types there are, such as PALB2, ATM, Lynch syndrome and more. They do not provide medical advice, but can provide emotional support and signposting to further sources of help.
VHL UK/Ireland – Charity for people living with von Hippel Lindau (VHL) syndrome and similar genetic conditions. It offers education, links to affiliated support groups, support and advice including a free to download handbook written with up to date information on diagnosing and treating VHL.
BRCare Connect CIC – Local community project offering information and practical support for people living with a BRCA+ diagnosis. This includes pop up events in South Yorkshire and East Riding which aim to educate on preventive surgery, identity changes and the psychological impact of living with BRCA+. Nicky also provides paid coaching which can be face to face in South Yorkshire and East Riding or online.

Manifesting this!
Awareness is Knowledge, Knowledge is Change and Change is Future!
A future where hope becomes tangible and achievable, a future where the C- word no longer has the power to destroy and wipe out entire families!
PREVENTION is the future!
The cost of cancer treatment to the individual, to the family around them, to the NHS, to the employer, to the tax payer, to the country... is unmeasurably high! Emotionally, physically and financially - heartbreaking!
As a country we need to STOP firefighting and START being proactive! We are better than this!
I will do anything, I can, to not let my family's deaths be in vain. I was the first one to have been given a CHOICE, and gosh, I am going to make it count!
People will be getting annoyed with my posts across all of my socials, even my personal accounts, being all about BRCA+, but what other vehicle have I got?
Something HAS to change! Are you with me?
Please share the heck out of this, you never know who it might reach!
Much love
Nicky
