“Why is my back pain taking so long to improve?”

When back pain has been around for a while, it can be tempting to focus on just one thing:

How much does it hurt?

… But pain intensity is only one part of the picture.

A recent study looking at people receiving physiotherapy for chronic low back pain found that recovery was also influenced by things such as:

• How much the problem was affecting day-to-day function
• Fear of movement
• Worrying about what the pain might mean
• Poor sleep
• Confidence in being able to stay active despite pain

Interestingly, pain intensity itself was not an independent predictor of how quickly someone recovered.

And that matters.

Because good rehabilitation isn’t simply about trying to get a pain score from an 8/10 to a 2/10.

It’s about understanding the whole person.

Can you move confidently?

Are you avoiding certain activities because you’re worried they will cause damage?

Are you sleeping badly?

Has pain started to affect work, exercise, hobbies or everyday life?

Do you feel confident that your body can become stronger and more capable again?

As therapists, those conversations can be just as important as assessing strength, movement and physical function.

Treatment might include exercise and progressive rehabilitation, but it can also involve education, rebuilding confidence, adapting activity and helping someone understand what they can safely do.

That’s what a holistic approach really means.

We don’t just treat a painful back. We work with the person who has the painful back.

“Is Shockwave Therapy like the ultrasound I had from my previous physio years ago?”

No, they are very different.

Traditional therapeutic ultrasound delivers low-intensity sound waves that most people barely feel. Although it was once routinely used for many muscle, tendon and joint problems, evidence supporting meaningful benefit across many common musculoskeletal conditions remains limited or uncertain.

That’s why therapeutic ultrasound isn’t something we routinely use at Free Your Body Therapy.

Radial Shockwave Therapy delivers considerably stronger mechanical pressure pulses into targeted tissues. It has a more specific, evidence-informed role in the management of selected persistent tendon-related conditions.

We also use diagnostic ultrasound, known as POCUS, but this is different again.

Diagnostic ultrasound may help us visualise relevant structures alongside your clinical assessment. It is an assessment tool, not a treatment.

So, at FYB:

🩷 Diagnostic ultrasound may support assessment.
🩷 Radial Shockwave may support selected treatment plans.
🩷 Progressive rehabilitation helps rebuild movement and capacity.

We don’t choose a treatment because it has always been used.

We choose it because the assessment, evidence and person in front of us suggest it is appropriate.

🎉 Happy Birthday, Terry! 🎂

Today is Terry’s birthday, although he would probably prefer that we kept that quiet. 😂

He’ll be spending the day helping everyone else feel younger while trying not to think about getting older himself!

Please join us in wishing our brilliant osteopath a very happy birthday. We hope you have a great day, Terry! 🩷

🏃 Does the same niggle keep interrupting your running? 🏃

You rest, it settles, you start running again, and the problem returns.

Whether it’s a grumbling Achilles, recurring knee or heel pain, or a calf or hamstring that keeps playing up, it can be difficult to know what to do differently.

We’re looking at offering a practical runners’ masterclass with Jane Cole, Chartered Physiotherapist, and want to hear whether you’d be interested.

Drawing on Jane’s experience treating longstanding running-related problems, the session would focus on practical strength and mobility exercises you can use alongside your running.

You’d practise the exercises with Jane’s guidance, receive feedback on your technique and learn how to adapt and progress them so you can continue confidently at home or in the gym.

⏱️ 75 minutes
👥 Limited to 10 runners
💷 £30 per person

No date set yet - we’re checking interest first.

📩 If this sounds useful, comment “RUNNERS” or message us with the days and times that usually suit you.

Welcoming our new graduate Sports Therapist - Alanas.

“Sport and fitness have always been a big part of my life, particularly basketball. I competed as a scholarship basketball athlete and have spent years around high-level sport, including professional and international-level athletes, which has given me a strong understanding of performance, recovery, and injury management.

I graduated from Anglia Ruskin University with a First Class Honours BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy degree, and I’m also a CIMSPA-approved Personal Trainer and Strength & Conditioning Trainer.

Whether you’re dealing with an injury, everyday aches and pains, returning to sport or looking to improve performance, I aim to provide practical, individual treatment and rehabilitation to help you move better and get back to doing what you enjoy.” Alanas

🍃 Championing exercise, understanding the individual 🍃

As a physiotherapist, I will always champion movement and exercise. But exercise doesn’t look the same for everyone.

Over the years, I’ve helped many hypermobile people of all ages, including those living with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS).

For some, hypermobility causes very few problems. For others, it can mean pain, joint instability, fatigue, reduced confidence in movement and difficulty with everyday activities.

Some people with hypermobility are incredibly active. Others may find walking, standing or managing day-to-day tasks much harder. And for many, symptoms and abilities can change from one day to the next. That’s why I believe in looking at the whole person — not just a diagnosis.

Exercise might mean building strength, improving joint control, working on confidence, gradually increasing activity or adapting movement around pain and fatigue.

One of the many ways I do this is through Clinical Pilates on the Reformer.

The Reformer can be adapted to suit the individual, allowing us to change the level of support, resistance and challenge depending on what that person needs on that particular day.

For one person, that might mean gentle supported movement. For another, it might mean progressing strength and control with much more challenging exercises.

But the Reformer is only one tool.

A holistic approach is about listening, understanding someone’s goals and finding the right combination of movement, rehabilitation, education and treatment for them.

There is no single programme that suits every person with hypermobility or hEDS.

Movement is personal.

What works for one person may not work for another, and what feels achievable today may look completely different tomorrow.

That doesn’t mean giving up on exercise.

It means making exercise work for the person in front of you.

✨Training doesn’t have to look traditional ✨

Exercise doesn’t have to mean running, lifting weights or spending hours in a gym.

Bungee training offers something different. It combines cardio, strength, balance and coordination—all while being supported by the harness.

It can be adapted to suit different abilities, whether you want to improve fitness, build confidence in movement or simply try something that feels fun.

As a physiotherapist, I can also adapt the exercises around your movement, previous injuries and individual goals.

Because the best exercise isn’t always the most traditional.

It’s the one you enjoy enough to keep doing.

⭐️What happens at your first appointment?⭐️

Before you arrive, we’ll review the forms you completed online. The more detail you can provide, the better, it helps us understand your symptoms, health history and what you’d like to get back to doing.

During your appointment, we’ll:

1️⃣ Talk through your concerns in more detail.
2️⃣ Complete a practical assessment of your movement and function.
3️⃣ Explain what we find and answer your questions.
4️⃣ Provide appropriate treatment.
5️⃣ Discuss the plan for moving forward.

Treatment will depend on what you need and who you are seeing. It could include hands-on treatment, acupuncture, Shockwave Therapy, MLS® Laser Therapy, Clinical Pilates or exercise-based rehabilitation.

You’ll also usually leave with some advice or a home exercise programme to begin working on between appointments.

You don’t need to know which treatment you need before booking, that’s what the assessment is for.
