Grass roots community initiative that collects and distributes hygiene/personal care items in Ipswich

14/10/2026

A photo of Vicky here from Newmarket Nexus receiving a donation of assorted hygiene products. Distributions like this to our Community Partners are only possible with donations from our collection points across the county, so thank you to everyone who keeps adding products to our boxes.
🌈
Newmarket Nexus is a non-profit organisation helping young people in the Newmarket area running many community events and a youth hub. We're hoping some of these products will go towards helping their Teen Hygiene Scheme and young mums through their Baby Essential Scheme.

It's National Hygiene Week!
πŸ’›
This week, The Hygiene Bank - Ipswich and In Kind Direct published 'Time to Act: Hygiene Poverty in the UK in 2026', revealing research sharing the true scale and impact of hygiene poverty. The research found that hygiene poverty has gone mainstream, affecting nearly 1 in 5 UK adults including 14% of people in the East of England.
πŸ’›
One of the big reveals of the report is that 41% of those affected by hygiene poverty are experiencing it for the first time this year. We don't want any of us to be struggling with hygiene poverty, and we definitely don't want more of us to be suffering. Thank you to all our donors who help us to help others.

To celebrate National Hygiene Week, on Thursday we partnered with Gainsborough Community Library to host a film screening of BAFTA award-winning film 'I, Daniel Blake', the film that inspired the creation of The Hygiene Bank.
πŸ’›
A huge thank you to Suffolk Community Libraries for helping us to make it happen and to every single person who came out to watch it with us. We were also so grateful for the collection of donations we received on the night, we will make sure these go to help those of us in the Suffolk area struggling like Daniel & Katie in the film. Thank you again for everyone's support for this event!

A very exciting announcement for National Hygiene Week! We're very thrilled to announce that Eastern Angles Theatre Company, who are giving a local twist to Oliver Twist with their Suffolk-set Christmas production from 27th November until 8th January, will be collecting product donations for us at The Hygiene Bank! We're so grateful the team reached out to us and we're looking forward to this partnership.
πŸ’›
Following their critically acclaimed adaptations of A Christmas Carol and Treasure Island, the production will feature a brilliant ensemble of professional actors, multi-roling, puppetry, inventive staging and live music and we're really excited to see the new production! Tickets for the show can be bought through Eastern Angles website or by phone.

This week The Hygiene Bank and In Kind Direct published 'Time to Act: Hygiene Poverty in the UK in 2026', revealing research sharing the true scale and impact of hygiene poverty in adults in the UK. The research found that hygiene poverty has gone mainstream, affecting nearly 1 in 5 UK adults. 41% of those affected by hygiene poverty are experiencing it for the first time this year; this is the new face of hygiene poverty.

When someone is living in hygiene poverty, they are having to make decisions about which items to prioritise, even though all of these products are "essentials". According to the report, in over 40% of cases, it is deodorant and toilet roll that people go without.
πŸ’›
Every product we collect from our donation boxes; each item donated from a brand; or any items we are able to purchase through funding, means that somebody in our local community can have access to these essentials.

Thank you very much to the Boots UK team for a huge brand donation at the start of last month! We were so grateful to be offered this fantastic pallet of Colgate and Oral-B products! With a reported 1 in 3 adult having tooth decay in the UK these products are so valuable and can help the people in our community keep their teeth clean and healthy.
🦷
Boots Uk has been a brand partner of The Hygiene Bank since 2019 and we're so grateful for their support, they have donated 1.7million products over the years and we're so lucky to have received this pallet here in Ipswich. To anyone who has purchased a qualifying product in store that has added to the brands donation, thank you.
