Iâm an aesthetic pharmacist practitioner but I havenât always been. Here is my storyâŚ.
Aged 17, I moved from Tipperary to Bradford to go to uni (and yes, it was a long wayđľ). This was my mum & I before I went out to my graduation ball in 1998.
And no, I was not a child prodigyđ¤Ł, we just finished school at 17 in Ireland at the time after doing our Leaving Certificate which is similar to Scottish Highers.
I studied for a Master of Pharmacy degree for 5 years & graduated 23 years ago.
Then I started my Pharmacy career at Leeds & worked in busy NHS hospitals for 20 years working my way up to Lead Pharmacist for Anticoagulation & Cardiology. This was me winning an award at workđ¤.
4 years ago I decided to train in aesthetics because of my passion for all things skincare having had acne in my teens & 20s & Rosacea from my 30s.
Confidence in my skin was at rock bottom. I was on a mission to work out how to sort my own skin woes out & learned that I loved sharing that knowledge with others. My favourite part of this job is not making you âlook youngerâ, although thatâs fab toođ, itâs making you âlook like you againâ and restoring that confidence you lost along the way.
So, I set up my own business in a beautiful home based purpose built clinic room. And I love it!
I still work in the NHS in a GP practice. I like to keep my hand in other branches of healthcare as I never stop learning & I think it helps me be a more well rounded healthcare professional.
Yep! I am a nerdđ¤ đ.
Life is seriously busy running my business alongside my NHS work, family & being chief organiser â
(I love a listâşď¸) at home.
But I wouldnât have it any other way and I occasionally get to sit down with a cuppa.
Whatâs your story?

Itâs funny how that question sneaks in, isnât it?
You can be halfway through an idea â researching a treatment, scrolling through before-and-afters, starting to feel that flicker of excitement â and then your stomach drops.
What will people think?
Itâs a quiet fear, but a powerful one.
Maybe itâs your friends. Maybe itâs your partner. Maybe itâs that one colleague who always has an opinion about everything.
You can already hear the comments:
âShe doesnât need that.â
âOh, sheâs one of those women now.â
âWhy canât people just age naturally?â
And even though no oneâs said a word, you start defending yourself in your head.
You close the tab, scroll past the post, pretend you werenât interested after all.
People will always have opinions.
And most of them arenât really about you.
They come from their own insecurities, their own discomfort, their own fear of being judged for caring.
Because itâs easier to criticise someone else than to admit you wish you had the same courage.
Youâre not doing this for them. Youâre doing it for you.
To feel lighter. To feel more at ease in your own skin. To wake up and not spend ten minutes hiding from your reflection.
That doesnât make you shallow. It makes you self-aware.
When someone says, âIâd never do that,â what they usually mean is, âI wish I could, but Iâm scared.â
And maybe they never will. Thatâs okay.
Because your choices donât need to make sense to anyone else â only you.
Youâre allowed to want to feel confident again.
Youâre allowed to take up space, quietly, without apology.
You donât have to explain, justify, or shrink to make other people comfortable.
So next time that thought creeps in â What will people think? â try answering it differently.
Maybe theyâll think you look happy.
Maybe theyâll think you look rested.
Maybe they wonât think anything at all.
And maybe, finally, you wonât care.

This morning I looked in the mirror and thought âI actually look ok todayâ and was feeling fairly positive about myself.
Until, I got into work at my NHS job and my boss asked me âAre you ok? You look tired.â
She was just being the caring person she is.
But I wasnât feeling tired for once - Iâm just bloody 46 (47 next week - eek!)
âMatureâ, does anyone actually like that word?
Letâs be brutally honest here - once you hit mid life itâs usually a polite way of saying youâre getting on a bit. That you are likely on the crest of âbeing over the hillâ.
The oestrogen levels are dropping fast and your skin along with every other cell in your body with oestrogen receptors is noticing the difference. And not in a good way!
You look in the mirror and no longer recognise the middle aged face staring back at you.
Your skin is duller, thinner, drier, more reactive, more lined and the moisturiser you have been using since your 20s is doing naff all to help.
When we were younger a bit of foundation & blusher could rescue a hungover head.
But these days, makeup just sits in your lined forehead and the confidence it gave you on a night out when âclubbingâ was part of your vocabulary has worn off.
The secret is out.
Makeup is no longer going to rescue your skin.
It needs more than a bit of surface level moisturiser.
It needs below surface hydration & rejuvenation and a consistent skincare routine suitable for maturing skin.
It doesnât have to be scary.
It starts with a consultation.
I forgot to pay for my coffee last week because my brain was so full.
The lovely lady had to follow my mum and I out the door to politely check if we were intending to pay.
Slightly embarrassing but understandable given the perimenopausal brain fog that my crossword book doesnât seem to be sorting out!
When I trained in aesthetics and set up my clinic 4 years ago I had absolutely no idea what it was to run your own business after working in NHS hospitals for 20 years.
Letâs just say itâs been a massive learning curve.
One of my first hurdles was learning how to post on Instagram being the social media dinosaur that I was!
But seriously, the mental load sometimes feels like my brain canât possibly fit another thing in alongside all the home / admin/ kid stuff that needs to be retained. The reminders app on my phone is a life saver!
Donât get me wrong. I love everything skincare and am obsessed with my little aesthetic clinic but sometimes it would be nice to dial down my overactive brain.
Thatâs why when I need some me time I close the door to my clinic room, hop on my clinic bed and listen to some soothing music under my LED mask. I know! Skin obsessed.
Us working mums canât keep running on empty. Some days your to-do list feels overwhelming.
Thats when you know you need some time just for you.

Somewhere between the laundry, the deadlines, the drop-offs, and the never-ending to-do list⌠I forgot about her.
Me.
The version of me who used to take her time getting ready.
Not just slapping on a bit of mascara in the downstairs loo before I run out the door.
Who felt confident in her skin â or at least, more connected to it.
Life got loud.
Busy.
Demanding.
And somewhere along the way, I slipped to the bottom of the priority list.
Everything else came first.
Everyone else came first.
And then one day I caught a glimpse of myself â not in a posed selfie, not in good lighting, just in the back camera on a rushed morning â and I thoughtâŚ
"When did I start disappearing?"
It wasnât about ageing.
It wasnât about vanity.
It was about recognition.
I just wanted to see a version of myself I still felt connected to.
Thatâs what led me back to aesthetics.
Not to chase youth â but to reconnect.
To feel refreshed.
To soften the tiredness etched on my face that didnât match how I felt inside.
To take back something that was mine.
And it was never about trying to be someone else.
It was about remembering myself.
Thatâs the thing no one tells you:
Sometimes, the most powerful self-care isnât bubble baths or affirmationsâŚ
Itâs giving yourself permission to say,
âI matter too.â
Even if itâs just an appointment.
Even if itâs just a subtle tweak.
Even if no one else notices â you will.
When is the last time you did something just for you?

I was so tired the other night I hopped into the bath with my bra onâŚ
This was a first for me, but also slightly worrying.
Thankfully, my brain cells whirred into action and alerted me to the fact that âsomething was wrong with this pictureâ before I fully submerged myself.
And it got me thinking; are working mums the busiest people on the planet?
I keep being told recently that in a few years the kids will have left home & the house will feel emptyâŚso we must embrace the chaos as long as it lastsâŚ.but seriously I could do with some less life admin.
The thing about running around like a headless chicken making sure everyone elseâs life runs like clockworkâŚis that your life doesnât & the end of the working week feels like youâve run an Ultramarathon. (I have never run anywhere near this, but you know what I mean!)
You look in the mirror and you start not to recognise the edging towards haggard, dull, uneven skin on your face & neck.
Letâs not even mention the adjective âturkeyâ in the vicinity of âneckâ. Itâs too depressing!
Youâre moisturising, youâre using expensive skincare - but you still keep looking older.
The brutal honest truth isâŚ
that your skincare routine and the odd facial when you get a gift voucher just isnât cutting it anymore.
Your skin needs more than surface level care to stay fresh and hydrated.
The secret?
Itâs all about skin renewal - boosting hydration from within and stimulating collagen.
If itâs time to schedule some self care message me.
If you can book everyoneâs elseâs appointments why canât you book this?

You need to be able to trust the person putting needles in your face.
âI always know I am in very good hands.â
Thatâs exactly what I want every woman who visits my aesthetic clinic in Harrogate to feel.
For me, aesthetic treatments arenât just about the treatment themselves.
I WILL take the time to really listen, understand what your skincare goals are, discuss your options honestly and talking through if you have any concerns.
I WONâT talk at you & make you feel unheard.
I WONâT make you feel pressured into the latest aesthetic treatment just because it is trending on TikTok.
Instead I will create a personalised skincare plan for you that feels right for you.
After your treatment it doesnât end there aftercare is also part and parcel of what to expect at Emerald.
Thank you to this lovely client who left me the above 5 âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸ Google review.
Your trust means everything.
If you have been waiting to book that consultation, this is your sign.

Uncomfortable truth: At home microneedling is really cosmetic microneedling.
This is something I get asked about all the time in clinic.
Is at home microneedling worth it?
You be the judgeâŚ
At home microneedling uses needles with a length of (ideally) up to 0.3mm but some are available up to 0.5mm...you should probably avoid these on your face.
These needles create channels in the epidermis enabling skincare products to be more readily absorbed.
In-clinic microneedling is medical microneedling & uses longer needles.
0.5-1.5mm on the face, neck & chest
1.5-2.5mm on the body
They pe*****te the epidermis & varying depths of the dermis creating controlled trauma, resulting in a skin healing that produces collagen and elastin - helping skin repair itself from within.
EFFECTIVENESS:
AT HOME MICRONEEDLING
⢠improved skin texture
⢠reduced appearance of fine lines
⢠more even skin tone
IN-CLINIC MICRONEEDLING
⢠improved skin tone & texture
⢠reduced wrinkle depth
⢠improved appearance of scars &
stretch marks
⢠hair regrowth
⢠reduced pigmentation

Has summer left its mark on your skin?
Summer skin damage.
Yep, itâs real and it doesnât take prisoners.
You finally took that well deserved holiday, headed off somewhere for a bit of sunshine and plonked yourself on a sun lounger for a week or two.
Why wouldnât you?
Nothing feels quite as luxurious as an early doors cocktail in the sun, the sound of waves in the background, and the blissful absence of your daily grind.
Youâve earned it.
But then, you get back home, unpack your suitcase, put 22 washes onâŚ.and as the tan fades something looks different when you look in the mirror.
Holidays, sunshine, heat, travel and disrupted routines can leave our skin looking and feeling a little different by the end of summer.
You may be noticing dehydration, duller, uneven skin tone or pigmentation, fine lines or changes in texture and skin quality.
September is the perfect opportunity to reassess your skin and give it what it needs.
â°Time to put yourself back on your to-do list.

This morning, my alarm felt harsh.
Not just loudâalmost like a slap across the face.
My eyes opened, but my body dragged behind.
Every muscle ached.
My mind was thick with fog.
It felt like Iâd been run over overnight.
I made my way to the bathroom.
Most days, I avoid the mirror.
Today I stared and thought,
âIs this how itâs always going to be?â
A few years back, I would have just brushed it off.
Maybe sipped stronger coffee or joked about âgetting older.â
Tried to laugh while piling on a little extra concealer.
But lately, it feels sh*te. Because itâs not just feeling tired. Itâs seeing the tired every time I look up.
You do what youâre supposed to do. You sleep as much as you can.
You drink the water.
You try the creams.
But the world still sees the puffy eyes.
The creases. Those lines that feel deeper every morning.
What Iâve learned is itâs not really about wanting to look young.
Itâs about wanting to look like how you still feelâawake, present, a bit fresher.
You donât want to hide who you are.
You just donât want exhaustion to be the first word someone sees on your face.
Thatâs why I do what I do as a job.
Not to erase every year.
Not to make people look like someone else.
Just to shake off that âI just woke up tiredâ look.
Small choices, big difference.
A little lift here, a softening there.
It helps your reflection match your spirit.
If you ever stand in front of the mirror and wish you looked as ready as you want to feel, message me.
No pressure.
Iâm happy to answer questions, share whatâs real, and help you feel a little more you.
Sometimes, thatâs all it takes.
A few honest answers.
And maybe the confidence to meet your own eyes in the morning again.
