Everyone is talking about Time in Range.

“Keep your glucose between 3.9 and 10 mmol/L at least 70% of the time.”

But there’s one big problem.

What if you cannot afford a CGM?

For millions of people living with diabetes in Nigeria and other low- and middle-income countries, wearing a continuous glucose monitor every day simply isn’t financially possible.

So does that mean HbA1c is useless?

Absolutely not.

Think of HbA1c as your three-month report card. It tells us roughly what your average glucose has been.

But it cannot tell us the whole story.

Two people can have the same HbA1c while one is relatively stable and the other is swinging between dangerous highs and lows.

That’s where strategic finger-stick testing becomes powerful.

Even without CGM, combining HbA1c with carefully timed glucose checks can tell us much more about what is happening throughout your day.

So the question isn't simply:

“HbA1c or Time in Range?”

The better question is:

“How can we use the tools we can actually afford, as effectively as possible?”
