ELLWOOD EPPS QUARTET

Flying in from Boston, Massachusetts, Canadian trumpeter Ellwood Epps Ellwood Epps leads a specially convened Glaswegian ensemble to open Haleh Fotowat’s Haleh Fotowat Flows and SOLOS exhibition. Saxophonist Raymond MacDonald Raymond MacDonald, bassist Una MacGlone, and drummer Stuart Brown Stuart Brown / AV Drummer will join Epps as improvisers working in the moment and from Epps’ compositions.

This performance is for anyone who is curious to hear new music, see new paintings, and even for those who aren’t, but may find themselves nearby anyhow. Those with an ear for improvised music especially welcome.

Performance starts at 2pm, Sun 30th Aug.

Flows and SOLOS

This month Transmission welcomes an international artist and scientist to Glasgow. For one week, Haleh Fotowat Haleh Fotowat takes over both floors of the gallery with Flows and SOLOS, opening with an hour of live improvised music from Ellwood Epps Ellwood Epps and three Scotland based artists, and closing with an artist talk.

Haleh Fotowat is an Iranian Canadian neuroscientist and artist based in Boston. Through scientific research at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University and abstract painting in her studio, she explores self organisation and emergence in living systems. Her paintings embrace improvisation, movement, and expressive colour to explore how complex forms emerge through interaction and change.

The show is about emerging forms, in living or non-living matter. Flow, movement, decisions to change course, and the structures that emerge. Paintings fill the main floor, while the basement turns to living forms with projections and sound from her scientific work.
