She had always carried it, and no amount of weight loss shifted it.
Disproportionate fat on the outer thighs with a slimmer waist is a recognised pattern called lipodystrophy. Diet and exercise change the rest of the body around it while the area itself stays. That mismatch is exactly what liposuction is for.
Around 1.3 litres of fat was removed through two small incisions on each side, under general anaesthetic, home the same day. Liposuction is a contouring operation, not weight loss: it removes fat cells permanently from the treated area, and the final shape emerges over months as swelling settles.
Results shown at six months. Individual results vary. If you recognise this pattern in yourself, a consultation is the place to find out whether it would help you.
The fear of something going wrong rarely arrives when you expect it to.
At a first consultation it is often barely there. It sharpens later, once a date is set and the operation stops being hypothetical. And the fears patients actually raise most are practical ones: pain, dressings, coping in the first week, and keeping the whole thing private.
There is a version of fear that helps you decide. It researches, asks questions and listens when the risks are explained. And there is a version that never decides at all, searching for a guarantee that does not exist. The test: is your fear leading you towards more information, or away from it?

Removing 1.2kg from each breast calls for a different technique.
In most breast reductions, the ni**le stays attached to its blood supply and is moved upwards. When the reduction is this large, the blood supply becomes unreliable, so the ni**le is instead removed entirely and replaced as a graft.
The trade-off is real: a grafted ni**le loses sensation and the ability to breastfeed. What is gained is a very large, reliable reduction. This patient, in her mid-50s, had years of neck and shoulder pain, caused by bra straps and skin irritation beneath the breasts. These photographs show her results six months after surgery.
Results vary between individuals and depend on anatomy and healing. If you are considering breast reduction, the consultation is with the surgeon who will operate.

Most patients who walk through my door have already thought about cosmetic surgery for a long time. Often years.
They know how their concern affects them. They know which clothes they avoid, when they feel self-conscious, how it sits quietly in the back of their mind.
What many have also had — quietly and repeatedly — is another, harder conversation. The one where they ask themselves whether they're allowed to feel this way at all.
Is this vain? What would my partner think? Am I being shallow? What if people judge me?
For many people, this internal conversation is far harder than anything that happens in a surgeon's office. And it doesn't get talked about much.
This is the first in a short series — What's Really Stopping You? — exploring the real, quiet barriers that hold people back from making free, informed decisions about cosmetic surgery.

We first shared her 6-week result — and here she is at 7 months post-op after a lower face and neck lift, upper and lower eyelid surgery, and fat transfer to the cheeks. Everything has settled beautifully, and she’s genuinely delighted with how natural her result looks.

We’re incredibly grateful to Dr Karen Watson, who has supported our team for over 25 years, as she approaches her well-earned retirement at the end of this month.
Karen has looked after our patients and our team throughout the years at Murrayfield Hospital, and more recently at Shawfair Park Hospital, Kings Park Hospital, and at our own Waterfront Hospital. The photo was taken on her last operating day with us at Waterfront.
Her calm presence, sound judgement and meticulous care have always given great reassurance — you know your patients are in safe hands when Karen is in theatre. It has been a privilege to work alongside her for so long.
On behalf of all of us, thank you, Karen, for your dedication, professionalism and kindness over the decades.

18-month results following lower face and neck lift with upper eyelid and brow rejuvenation
These results are shown at 18 months, once the skin and underlying tissues have fully relaxed. Early results, often seen within the first six months, can appear tighter as the skin has not yet had time to retract and settle. By around a year, the final outcome becomes apparent — refined, balanced and natural.
Our aim in every facelift is to deliver subtle, long-lasting rejuvenation that restores harmony without altering a patient’s individual character.

Our patient, aged in her early 50s, came to Quaba Plastic Surgery in Edinburgh after years of struggling with very large breasts. She experienced persistent neck and shoulder pain, poor posture, and difficulty finding clothing that fit comfortably.
She underwent a bilateral breast reduction, with 920g of tissue removed from her right breast and 1,240g from her left. Six months later, she reported feeling like a new person — her pain and tiredness had completely resolved, her posture had improved, and she was delighted with the overall shape and symmetry of her breasts.
Her story shows how breast reduction surgery can be life-changing, not only improving appearance but also transforming comfort, health, and quality of life.

Breast reduction surgery can be life-changing — not only physically but also emotionally and socially. It can reduce discomfort, improve posture, and make exercise easier, often encouraging a healthier lifestyle and greater confidence.
Many women with a higher BMI may still be suitable for surgery. Each patient is assessed individually, with safety as our highest priority.
Breast reduction is about more than appearance — it is about comfort, confidence, and quality of life.

This remarkable tummy tuck result at 6 months highlights just how transformative surgery can be—not only in relieving physical discomfort, but also in restoring confidence and quality of life.
This patient had longstanding concerns related to abdominal overhang and previous caesarean scarring. After a full tummy tuck and liposuction, she achieved a smoother contour, improved scar placement, and a result that far exceeded expectations.
All procedures are carried out by BAAPS consultant plastic surgeons at our state-of-the-art private hospital in Edinburgh.
We’re very grateful to her for allowing us to share her journey.
