The Story of the Shield | Part 3: When Everything Stood Still
We had built something special.
The salons were growing, our reputation was growing, and years of hard work were paying off.
Then, almost overnight, everything stopped.
COVID.
Without question, it became the biggest challenge The Wax Bar had ever faced.
Our doors closed. Treatment rooms fell silent. Diaries disappeared.
But the bills didn’t.
We had multiple salons, leases, overheads and, most importantly, a team of people whose livelihoods mattered enormously to me.
Then came another battle.
Government support.
At the beginning of the pandemic, Scottish businesses with multiple premises were at a significant disadvantage under the initial grant arrangements. I couldn’t understand how we were expected to protect several premises and the jobs attached to them with support for just one.
So I decided to speak up.
Together with another Edinburgh business owner, I launched a petition calling for equal support for Scottish businesses. Within days, around 1,000 people had supported it, and our campaign was picked up by the press.
But for me, it became about something even bigger.
Our industry deserved a voice.
Beauty is so often dismissed as “just beauty”, yet behind it are skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, employers and thriving businesses contributing enormously to our economy.
We create jobs.
We train people.
We build careers.
We contribute to our high streets and communities.
And we deserve to be taken seriously.
COVID taught me that sometimes resilience isn’t simply about surviving.
Sometimes it’s about being prepared to stand up and fight for what you believe in.
We held on. We adapted. We fought for what we’d built.
And eventually, the doors opened again.
Perhaps more than any other chapter, COVID explains what our shield represents today:
Protection. Strength. Courage. Resilience.
Not because nothing has ever knocked us down.
But because when something did…
We got back up.
The shield carries that chapter of our story with it.

he Story of the Shield | Part 2: Taking the Leap
A vision is just an idea…
Until someone is brave enough to act on it.
After deciding to create The Wax Bar, reality quickly set in.
There were no investors waiting to fund the dream.
No roadmap showing me how to build one of the UK’s largest specialist waxing salon groups.
No guarantees that it would work.
There was just me, a belief that the industry could be better, and a willingness to take a risk that many people didn’t understand.
Starting a business is exciting, but it’s also terrifying.
Every decision matters.
Every pound counts.
Every setback makes you question whether you’re doing the right thing.
But I knew one thing from the very beginning:
If we were going to build something special, we couldn’t be average.
We had to be specialists.
That meant creating standards that clients could trust, building a brand that people would remember, and investing in training that would help our therapists become the very best in the industry.
It wasn’t always the easiest path.
In fact, it was often the harder one.
But looking back, those early decisions became the foundations of everything The Wax Bar is today.
The shield reminds us that success isn’t built overnight.
It’s built through thousands of small decisions, countless sacrifices, and the courage to keep going when nobody else can see what you see.
Every strong foundation starts with someone willing to take the first step.
This was ours.
