Mars contains Olympus Mons, a volcano so enormous that Mount Everest would reach less than halfway toward its summit.

Olympus Mons is the largest known volcano in the Solar System, rising approximately 21.9 kilometers (13.6 miles) above the Martian surface. Standing at more than twice the height of Mount Everest, which reaches 8,849 meters (29,032 feet) above sea level, it is the tallest volcano known to science.

Its extraordinary scale is not limited to its elevation. Olympus Mons extends roughly 600 kilometers (370 miles) across, while its slopes are so gentle—averaging only around a 5% gradient—that a person standing nearby on Mars might not immediately recognize that they were looking at a mountain. Scientists think its immense size was made possible because Mars does not have active plate tectonics, allowing lava to repeatedly erupt from the same hotspot over millions of years. At the summit is a huge caldera complex nearly 80 kilometers (50 miles) across, large enough to contain numerous major cities on Earth.

The houses were painted so fishermen could recognise their own home from out at sea. 🏡⛵

Marina Corricella on Procida is the oldest fishing village on the island, built in tiers with vaulted arches and external staircases, and accessible only on foot. ⏳🥾

Procida was Italian Capital of Culture in 2022 and remains far quieter than Capri or Ischia. Il Postino was filmed here. 🎬✨
