It’s always best to have a blemish properly assessed and professionally treated. DIY removal can cause bleeding, infection, scarring or pigmentation.

“Everyone will develop a blemish at some point in their life.” — TRUE
Blemishes are incredibly common, and most of us will develop some type of benign skin growth or blemish during our lifetime.

“Milia are just another type of comedone.” — FALSE
Milia are small keratin-filled cysts that sit beneath the surface of the skin. They aren’t blocked pores or blackheads, so they shouldn’t be treated in the same way.

“You should wait until a blemish gets really bad before seeing someone.” — FALSE
You don’t need to wait until a blemish becomes large, irritated or bothersome. If you’re concerned about something on your skin, it’s better to have it assessed.

“Skin tags can appear due to hormones.” — TRUE
Hormonal changes can play a role in the development of skin tags, which is one reason they can become more noticeable during certain stages of life.

This client initially thought this mole had developed after she’d picked a spot, but it was assessed by a dermatologist through and confirmed as a red mole.

As always with cosmetic mole reduction, the aim is to flatten the mole rather than remove it completely. Using a fine diathermy probe, I gently tapped over the surface in a criss-cross pattern, working across the whole surface area of the mole.
