Why does the choice of serum matter in microneedling?

One question I often get asked is what makes my microneedling treatments different.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For me, microneedling isn’t simply about the device or the needles. It’s about understanding the skin I’m treating and choosing the right approach for its individual needs.

I’m very particular about the products I work with. I invest in carefully selected professional formulations, including products sourced internationally. But it’s not just about the brand or where a product comes from. It’s about its quality, safety, suitability and purpose.

Every microneedling treatment begins with assessing the skin, understanding its concerns and deciding which protocol and products are appropriate.

I don’t believe in following the same protocol for every client. What works for one person’s skin may not be suitable for another.

No two skins are the same, so why should their treatments be?

“You can’t microneedle acne.”
“You can’t microneedle rosacea-prone skin.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But is it really that simple?
This is exactly why I always say there is a difference between knowing how to perform microneedling and understanding microneedling.

Acne is not one presentation. Rosacea-prone skin is not one presentation either. What matters is what is happening in the skin on the day you are treating it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Active inflammation, pustules, infection, a compromised barrier or an active rosacea flare should never simply be needled over because “microneedling is good for the skin”. Equally, having a history of acne or rosacea does not automatically tell you everything you need to know about whether a client is suitable.

This is where consultation, skin assessment, device guidance, treatment depth, technique, product selection and knowing when NOT to treat become so important.

I’ve worked with many acne and rosacea-prone clients throughout my years in practice, and the biggest lesson experience has taught me is that there is no one protocol for every skin.

I’m Level 4 qualified in Advanced Aesthetic Practice and have continued to attend further microneedling training throughout my career because education shouldn’t stop when you receive a certificate.

And this is exactly what I teach my students.

My Microneedling Training isn’t just about how to hold a pen and perform the treatment. We go into skin assessment, client selection, contraindications, treatment planning, depths and techniques, product selection, complications, aftercare and, most importantly, when to treat, when to adapt and when to say no.

Because confidence doesn’t come from simply knowing the steps of a treatment.
It comes from understanding WHY you’re doing them.

Cleansing might look like one of the simplest steps of a facial, but it plays an important role in everything that follows.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It removes makeup, excess oil and surface build-up, giving me a clean base to properly assess the skin and prepare it for the next stages of treatment.

And remember, not every skin needs the same cleanser or the same approach. Product choice should always be based on the skin in front of you and the treatment you’re performing.
