🔬 WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR SPECIMEN AFTER REMOVAL?

When a skin lesion is removed and sent for histology, there’s a carefully controlled process behind the scenes.

Following removal, the specimen is:

🧪 Placed into a labelled specimen pot containing formalin — this preserves the tissue so it can be examined accurately.

🚚 Safely transported to the histology laboratory using the appropriate specimen handling and transport procedures.

🔬 Processed in the laboratory — the tissue is prepared, embedded, cut into extremely thin sections and placed onto microscope slides.

👩‍⚕️ Examined under the microscope by a specialist pathologist, who assesses the cells and tissue to determine the diagnosis.

📄 A formal histology report is produced and returned to the clinic. We review the result and communicate it to you, including any further action required.

At Bolton Private Minor Surgery, specimens are sent for histological examination where clinically indicated.

At Bolton Private Minor Surgery, every lesion is clinically assessed before treatment. This may include examination with a dermatoscope where appropriate.

If anything looks suspicious or falls outside our scope, we won’t remove it cosmetically — we’ll advise you on the appropriate next step.

If it’s suitable for treatment, we’ll discuss your options, possible risks, expected healing and whether histology is required.
