I started my career in a men's section of hairdressers nearly 41 years ago.

Its bespoke hairdressing is designed, refined to deliver an individual result to our male customers versus a quick run over your head with clippers.

That is the sentence that's been repeated. Many times, since we came back from lockdown in April 2021.

I feel like myself again.

Of course, hair is so essential that it profoundly impacts how we feel the way we identify with ourselves. And this was brought home to me powerfully in the last lockdown in 2020.

Because, as some of you know, my wife was having treatment for breast cancer in 2020.
I thought as a hairdresser that I was switched on to the impact of losing your hair via chemotherapy.

I've dealt with it quite a lot in the salon, and I think. I probably know more about it than the average man, and I think I can empathise with it perhaps more than the average man.

However, I was amazed. With my wife's reaction in the respect that there she was, fighting a very serious disease, breast cancer, and going through all the discomfort that chemotherapy brings.

And the thing that was upsetting her the most was losing her hair.

I think when you see that happening, and then you see people come into the salon, and they got hair everywhere post lockdown.

You realise they have lost a part of themselves and may not be as dramatic as when somebody is having chemotherapy treatment, but they've lost a part of themselves in effect.

And I think the reason for that is, for women, it's an identity.
It's femininity.
It's showing how they feel to the world.

And I think partly through my wife's experience and partly through the lockdown. It just reiterated what an incredibly powerful thing hair is.

It does nothing tangible. But it just shows that it's so much more than just hair it's part of our overall identity.

I think that makes hairdressing so worthwhile because you can make somebody's life so much better.

But also potentially worse :)

So instantly think that's where the consultation is so key because you want to get the right identity, the right feel for that person because that's so important to them.

Understandably over the last couple of weeks, there has been a lot of focus on getting some hair off :) after the lengthy lockdown.
