I witnessed my first ever positive aspiration whilst one of my students was carrying out a cheek filler treatment under my observation.

As a Aesthetic Trainer, I ensure all my students are confident and competent enough:

1. To inject safely, including aspiration and ensuring the correct needle depth at all times✅
2. Have a great understanding of the facial anatomy✅
3. Are able to recognise complications and manage complications effectively & efficiently✅

For those who don’t know what positive aspiration means, it is when blood flashes back into the needle when the plunger is drawn back for a few seconds. A positive aspiration means that the needle is in a vessel.

In this case IF the dermal filler was injected into the blood vessel then this would have caused a Vascular Occlusion (VO). This term is used to describe a blocked blood vessel 🩸. A VO is relatively rare if your injector is injecting safely and all steps are taken to ensure safe injecting.

HOWEVER there is always a risk of a VO. It’s very important for your medical practitioner to discuss the potential risk during your consultation process.

Your practitioner should ALWAYS have an up to date emergency kit in case of an emergency. As medical practitioners we have a duty of care towards all of our patients.
