Domestic Abuse Awareness Month: Support Available for Anyone Affected in Doncaster...

October marks Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness of domestic abuse, the impact it can have on individuals and families, and the support available to those affected.

Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or financial circumstances. While disagreements can occur in any relationship, domestic abuse involves patterns of controlling, coercive, threatening, or violent behaviour and should never be tolerated.

Recognising that a relationship is abusive can be difficult. Many people experiencing abuse feel isolated, frightened, or uncertain about where to turn for help. Knowing that support is available can be the first step towards safety and recovery.

Councillor Gemma Cobby, Cabinet Member for Regulation and Enforcement, Planning and Safer Communities, said: "Home should be a place where people feel safe, supported and secure. Sadly, for some people, it is a place of fear and control. I want anyone experiencing domestic abuse to know that you are not alone. Across Doncaster, dedicated professionals and partner organisations are working together to provide confidential support and help people rebuild their lives. Please reach out. Support is available, and we are here to help every step of the way."

The Doncaster Domestic Abuse Hub continues to make a significant difference in supporting victims and survivors across the borough. Over the past year, the Hub has received 2,017 referrals, the highest number recorded in the last five years. This increase reflects growing awareness within communities, greater confidence in local support services, and more people seeking help to live a life free from abuse.

One survivor said: "Your support was invaluable. Priceless. You dedicated your time and expertise to help me understand, process and see the reality of the situation I was in. You helped me see a path forward when I felt unable to find one myself."

Anyone concerned about their own safety, or worried that a friend, family member, neighbour or colleague may be experiencing domestic abuse, is encouraged to seek advice and support.
