Packing up a bespoke skincare prescription following an online skin consultation đ¤
This client came to me experiencing reactive, irritated skin around the mouth and nasolabial area while using prescription tretinoin.
The main concern? A compromised skin barrier.
Tretinoin can be an incredible ingredient for improving cell turnover, texture, pigmentation and signs of ageing â but sometimes the skin needs a little extra support while it adjusts.
So rather than throwing more aggressive actives at already reactive skin, our priority is calm, support and repair.
One of the key additions to her routine is a ceramide, helping to support the skin barrier, reduce moisture loss and soothe that dry, sensitised feeling.
I've then selected a small number of gentler, mildly active products to complement the renewal process from tretinoin without unnecessarily overwhelming the skin.
Because good skincare isn't about using the strongest products you can tolerate.
It's about knowing when to treat, when to support, and when to let the skin recover.
Every skin is different â which is exactly why I love creating bespoke skincare plans rather than one-size-fits-all routines.

CONFUSED? YOUâRE NOT THE ONLY ONE đ
The aesthetics industry loves a fancy title. But hereâs the thing⌠some of the phrases you see all over social media donât necessarily tell you anything meaningful about a practitionerâs qualifications, experience or standards.
đ âAward-winning clinic/injectorâ
Sounds impressive â but always look a little deeper. Who gave the award? What were the judging criteria? Was it independently judged, public-voted, or linked to paid entry/sponsorship? An award alone shouldnât be your measure of clinical competence.
𧴠âMedical-grade skincareâ
Another phrase that sounds reassuring, but âmedical gradeâ isnât, by itself, a regulated quality category for cosmetics in the UK. Look at the ingredients, formulation, evidence and suitability for your skin rather than the wording on the marketing.
đ âAdvanced injectorâ
Advanced according to whom? There isnât a protected professional title of âadvanced injector.â A course certificate and a fancy Instagram bio donât automatically tell you someoneâs underlying healthcare qualifications, prescribing status, years of experience or ability to recognise and manage complications.
⨠âExpertâ / âMaster injectorâ
Same problem. These words can be used as marketing descriptions, so ask what actually sits behind them.
When choosing someone to treat your face, look beyond the buzzwords.
Check their professional registration. Ask about their experience. Ask who prescribes. Ask about complications training and what happens if something goes wrong. Look at their work â and never feel awkward asking questions.
Because in aesthetics, a title can sound impressive.
Competence has to be demonstrated.
And yes⌠this one may ruffle a few feathers. đŞśđ

⨠WHY I LOVE LACTIC ACID IN A SKINCARE ROUTINE â¨
If your skin is looking dull, uneven or a little lacklustre, lactic acid could be a great addition to your routine.
Lactic acid is an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) that gently exfoliates the surface of the skin, helping to loosen and remove dead skin cells.
The result? đđź
⨠Brighter, more radiant skin
⨠Smoother skin texture
⨠Helps improve the appearance of pigmentation
⨠Can soften the appearance of fine lines
⨠Helps prevent that dull, congested-looking surface
⨠Supports better hydration than some other exfoliating acids
And here's something many people don't realise...
Lactic acid is also a component of the skin's natural moisturising factor, which is one reason it can be a lovely option when you want exfoliation without reaching straight for more aggressive acids.
But remember â more exfoliation does NOT mean better skin.
The correct strength and frequency should be chosen for your skin, and acids should always be introduced carefully alongside a good barrier-supporting routine and daily SPF. âď¸
Not sure which active ingredients your skin actually needs?
Book a skin consultation with Nurse Gemma and I'll create a routine based on your skin, your concerns and your goals â not what's currently trending.
Good skin isn't about using everything. It's about using the right things. đ¤

A TITLE COMES WITH TRUST.
When you see âDrâ on an aesthetics page, what do you assume?
For many patients, that title immediately communicates medical training, regulation, accountability and trust.
But an overseas medical qualification does not automatically mean someone is GMC registered or licensed to practise medicine in the UK.
And that distinction matters.
This isn't about questioning somebody's education or qualifications in another country. It's about transparency and patient safety here in the UK.
Patients deserve to understand who is treating them, what their professional role is, which UK regulator they are accountable to, and whether their registration can be independently verified.
In aesthetics, titles carry weight. They can influence who a patient trusts with their face, body and health.
Professional titles should never create a misleading impression about someone's UK registration or regulatory status.
Before choosing any practitioner, ask: ⢠What is your professional qualification? ⢠Are you registered with a UK healthcare regulator? ⢠What is your registration number? ⢠Who regulates your practice? ⢠Are you appropriately insured for the treatment you're providing?
For doctors, you can check current registration and licence status directly on the GMC Medical Register.
This isn't about tearing other practitioners down.
It's about informed consent, transparency, accountability and putting patient safety before marketing.

A man sold an invisible sculpture for ÂŁ18,000⌠and here I am trying to convince everyone to wear SPF every day. đâď¸
No sculpture. No materials. Nothing you can actually see.
Meanwhile, Iâm over here explaining that the thing you canât always see happening to your skin â UV damage â is contributing to pigmentation, collagen breakdown and premature skin ageing.
Apparently selling invisible art is easier than selling daily SPF. đ
So this is your friendly Nurse Gemma reminder:
WEAR. YOUR. SPF.
Yes, even when itâs cloudy.
Yes, even when itâs not hot.
Yes, even when you ânever burn.â
Your future skin will thank you. đ¤

Beautiful lips arenât created by simply adding filler. đ
Theyâre created by understanding anatomy.
Every lip is different â the Cupidâs bow, vermilion border, tubercles, philtral columns, underlying muscle, blood vessels and the relationship between the upper and lower lip all matter when planning treatment.
For me, lip enhancement is about working with your natural anatomy, not fighting against it.
Itâs knowing where to add volume, where to create definition and, just as importantly, where NOT to inject. The goal isnât to give everyone the same lips. Itâs to enhance the shape you already have while keeping your features balanced and recognisably you.
Technique matters. Product choice matters. But anatomical knowledge, assessment and experience are what bring everything together.
Natural. Balanced. Beautifully enhanced. đ¤
