❤️ A little favour to ask, please…

If you’re feeling unwell, I would be so grateful if you could please avoid popping into the salon until you’re feeling better.

As a self-employed salon owner, I rely on being fit and well to be able to open my doors and keep my business running. Unfortunately, I’ve been absolutely floored by a virus this week, and although I can’t say for certain where I’ve caught it, it’s a reminder of just how easily illnesses can spread.

I’m talking particularly about walk-ins, especially for sunbed sessions. I know it’s only a 9-minute sunbed session, and it might seem like such a quick visit, but even those few minutes can expose someone else to an illness that could leave them feeling absolutely dreadful for days.

Unfortunately, I’m living proof of just how badly a virus can hit.

I’m actually away for my birthday this weekend, and instead of enjoying my time away, I’ve spent most of it laid on the sofa feeling absolutely awful. We’re heading home tonight, and I need to get the electrician in, with every intention of opening the salon tomorrow. But honestly, my body is in complete meltdown.

I’ve spoken to the doctors, and they’ve advised that it’s viral, but this one has really hit me hard. Sometimes we underestimate just how much a virus can take out of someone.

This has meant closing early or even closing the salon completely, which is something I really can’t afford to do, especially at this time of year.

One of the hardest parts of being self-employed is that there’s no easy backup plan. To get someone in to cover the salon for just 1 week would cost me over £400, and unfortunately, that simply isn’t viable when you consider the already huge costs involved in running the business. This is one of the reasons I work on my own rather than having a team of staff. I work hard to keep the business running and the costs manageable, but it also means that when I’m poorly, there’s nobody to step in without a significant extra expense.

It also affects more than just me. Two members of my family work at our sister salon, and if a bug or virus is passed on, it could affect their health and their ability to work, potentially impacting their business too. It’s a knock-on effect that can reach far beyond one person or one salon.

Being self-employed means that when I’m poorly, everything becomes a worry. I worry about the business, letting customers down, recovering properly, and passing something on to my own family.

I also feel incredibly guilty because, like so many self-employed people, I tend to push through and come into work even when I’m feeling unwell. Then I worry that I could be passing something on to others, or that by not giving myself the rest I need, I’m only making myself worse and prolonging my recovery.

I completely understand that bugs and viruses are part of life, and I’m not expecting everyone to avoid the salon over every little sniffle. But what might feel like a minor cold to one person can completely wipe someone else out.

So please, if you’re feeling unwell, could you kindly wait until you’re feeling better before coming in for your sunbed session? Those 9 minutes can wait, and that small bit of consideration could make a huge difference to someone else. ❤️

I absolutely love what I do, and I hate having to close the salon or let people down. But I’m only one person, and sometimes my body simply won’t let me keep pushing through.
