24 years in hairdressing, and I'm still learning. ✂️

When I started at 18, I thought blue hair meant putting blue dye on someone's head. If only it were that simple! 😂

I trained with a very strict Japanese hair company in São Paulo, Brazil, and honestly, at first, a lot of my motivation came from not wanting to get shouted at.

But somewhere along the way, something changed. The things I used to struggle with became the things I enjoyed the most.

I started wanting to understand not just how to do something, but why it worked. I became more precise, more curious, and more passionate about the little details.

And 24 years later, that desire to learn is still there.

Sometimes, you don't fall in love with something because you're naturally good at it. Sometimes, you fall in love with it because you keep showing up, learning, and getting better.

And maybe that's true for more than just hairdressing. ❤️

I never really planned to work for myself.

It took more than 20 years, several salons, different countries, different cultures, different hair textures… and a global pandemic for me to realise there was another way of doing things.

From being trained by a very strict Japanese hair company in São Paulo, to working alongside people from all over the world, every place taught me something.

But it was after Covid, and watching what was happening on Instagram, that I started noticing a gap between what clients were asking for and how the traditional salon system was set up.

Then I started seeing stylists in the US taking the plunge and creating their own way of working.

And eventually, I thought…

Why not me?

So I took the plunge too.

And honestly, it was the best decision I’ve ever made for my career.

This is the story of how Flávio Colour Hair came to be.

I didn’t build my clientele by trying to fit more clients into the day.

I built it by learning to give each head of hair the time it actually needed.

Lockdown + Instagram changed the way clients found inspiration. Suddenly, people were coming in with very specific colour ideas — and I knew I could create them.

The problem? The traditional 45-minute booking system wasn’t designed for that.

So I started changing the way I booked appointments.

More time for the application.
More time for development.
More time for the finishing.

And eventually, my clients understood exactly what they needed to ask for when they booked.

That’s exactly how I managed to build up my clientele.

A little story about something I learned when I was 18 — and still believe today. ❤️

My first salon taught me that the energy you give to people is the energy you attract.

And after many years behind the chair, I can honestly say… my mentor was right. 😂

I was the shyest person…

So why did I choose to have BLUE SPIKY HAIR? 💙

People stared.
People laughed.

My hair was never about them.

It was about me.

And 40+ years later choosing things I like, I finally understand what my mum was trying to tell me.

Sometimes hair doesn't just change how you look.
It changes how you see yourself.

The friendships we make at work are underrated.

You spend SO much of your life with these people.

Then one day…
they leave.

And suddenly, you realise
how much they were part of your everyday life.

Which makes me wonder…

Why create unnecessary drama
with people you spend most of your day with?

Be kind.

Enjoy each other.

Because people don’t stay forever.

I never believed in “energy” until something very strange happened to me in the salon… 👀

A shoulder massage.
A very angry client.
A Reiki master.
And then suddenly… I was standing at a tap trying to understand why I felt like I was carrying someone else’s emotions.

Coincidence? Energy? Something else?

I honestly still don’t know. But I’ve never forgotten what happened that day.
