The part of being a hairdresser that nobody really talks about… 💚

Sometimes being a hairdresser is hard.

And no, I don't mean because you're standing on your feet all day, your back hurts or you've got colour all over your clothes.

I mean the emotional side of it.

Because you don't just do someone's hair and forget about them the second they walk out the door.

You get to know people.

You hear about their lives. Their families. Their relationships. Their worries. Their heartbreak. Their good news. Their bad days.

Sometimes you're their hairdresser.

Sometimes you're their therapist.

Sometimes you're their cheerleader.

Sometimes you're the person they can tell something to that they haven't been able to tell anyone else.

And for a few hours, that chair becomes their little escape from the outside world.

They come in feeling rubbish and you want them to walk out feeling like the best version of themselves.

And that's the bit people don't always see.

Because when they leave, sometimes we take a little bit of them home with us.

We wonder if they're okay.

We wonder if they're really happy with their hair.

We replay conversations in our heads.

"Did I say the right thing?"

"Did I listen enough?"

"Did I make them feel better?"

"Did I give them what they needed today?"

And sometimes… we simply don't know.

But we do know that we tried.

We tried our absolute best.

Because when you choose a career that is built around making people feel good, you don't just switch that part of yourself off when you leave work.

You care.

You worry.

You remember.

And sometimes it can be emotionally exhausting.

But then you have those moments where a client looks in the mirror, smiles and says…

"I feel like me again."

And suddenly you remember why you do it.

Because this career was never just about hair.

It's about confidence.

It's about listening.

It's about giving someone a safe space.

It's about making someone's day a little brighter.

It's about giving someone a few hours where the rest of the world can wait.

And maybe that's why, despite the stress, the worry, the long days and the emotional energy we give…

we keep doing it.

Because sometimes the career you chose isn't just about what you do.

It's about the difference you make to the people who need you most.

And when you realise that…

the sacrifices start to feel worth it. 💚
