Fitness, conditioning and pacing aren’t the same thing.

If a session falls apart, identify which one failed before changing your training.

Missed sessions aren’t training debt.

Move the work when it still fits. Drop it when it compromises what comes next.

Heart-rate zones are useful, but they’re not absolute. Check how yours are calculated, then use them alongside RPE, breathing and output.

Easy conditioning has a job: build your aerobic base at an effort you can recover from.

It’s easy to start controlled, chase the screen and gradually turn it into another demanding session.

For general easy aerobic work, being able to speak comfortably in full sentences is a useful check. If you’ve got individual intensity targets, use those too.

Adjust the pace or resistance as needed to keep the effort where it belongs. Finish with enough left to train well again.

Going until you fail can leave you standing over the ball with no idea when you’re starting again.

If you need to break your wall balls, practise a set size you can repeat and a clear restart routine. Rehearse it when you’re already carrying fatigue, rather than only when you’re fresh.

Keep the reps clean, control your breathing and know what you’re doing when the ball goes down.

Your plan should give you a way to keep moving when the station gets difficult.

Follow for practical HYROX station advice you can use in training.

The team out at HYROX Canada HYROX 🇩🇪| 🇦🇹|🇨🇭 HYROX France and a few running races last week - I don’t really need to say anything the results speak for themselves. Team of proper grafters. Show up do the work, get the results. No bu****it, no magic workout.

Cross-training becomes more important as total training volume increases.

If you are training seven or eight hours per week, most of that time probably needs to be quite specific. You do not have enough spare capacity to fill the week with loads of general work and hope the important HYROX qualities take care of themselves.

At twenty, twenty-five or thirty hours per week, the picture changes. There is only so much running, lunging, burpees and station-specific work you can tolerate before the recovery cost becomes stupid.

That is where cross-training earns its place.

Bike work, ergs, stepper sessions and other lower-impact aerobic training let higher-volume athletes keep building overall fitness without endlessly repeating the same mechanical stress.

The more training time you have, the more room there is for general aerobic work around the specific work.

Specificity still matters. You just do not need every single hour to look like HYROX.

This is the whole puzzle of HYROX.

Do you need to get better at the running, or do you need to get better at the stations? If you improve the running, do you then run slightly more controlled so you can produce more on the stations? If the stations improve, does that give you more room to push the runs?

There is no single answer because the goal is not to maximise one part of the race. It is to get to the finish line as efficiently as possible.

That means deciding which qualities actually need work, then using the right methods to improve them. Some of that work will be very specific. Some of it will not. You can build aerobic capacity through other modalities, then use the quality sessions to train the more specific demands of HYROX.

The best programme is not the one that looks most like the race every day.

It is the one that fits your training history, available time, lifestyle and current limiters, and improves the right things in the right order.
