WE LOST £80,000 ON ONE BUSINESS DECISION 💷

Yes, it is true.

We opened an academy in Ireland and closed it three years later.

It was not because we could not attract students. We had brilliant students who supported us.

A few months after opening, lockdown hit.

The doors had to close, but the rent still had to be paid.

It was a brutal way to begin, but lockdown was not the only problem.

The biggest problem was us.

We thought we could manage an academy in another country while running Manchester and raising young children.

We were wrong.

We could not be there enough. We could not spot problems quickly enough, and we knew we could not consistently give every student the same House of Girl Boss experience they received in Manchester.

We spent 4 years trying to make it work.

Closing felt like admitting we had failed.

We had invested so much money, time, and emotion that part of us wanted to continue simply because we could not bear to lose it.

But the £80,000 had already gone.

Keeping the doors open would not bring it back. It would only cost us more.

So we closed 💔

That decision broke us at the time, but it changed how we think about growth.

Bigger does not always mean better.

Growth is not about having the most locations. It is about doing what you do properly and protecting the experience people trust you to provide.

That lesson helped shape the mansion.

Instead of trying to be everywhere, we created one place where the training, accommodation, team, and student experience could come together under one roof 🏰

We know we are not the only business owners who have made a bad decision, and we are not afraid to admit ours.

People are quick to share the launches that sell out, the new premises, and the exciting milestones.

But the failures often contain the most useful lessons.

If sharing this helps one business owner stop pouring more money, time, and energy into something they already know is not working, then admitting we lost £80,000 is worth it.

Ask yourself this:

If you had not already invested in it, knowing everything you know today, would you still choose it?

If the honest answer is no, what is keeping you there?

We will always celebrate the wins, but we will share the failures too.

Both are part of building a business 🩷

Beginner does not mean behind 💗

I think some of you need reminding of that.

Because when you are new, it is SO easy to look at somebody who has been doing this for years, and convince yourself you should already be where they are.

You see the busy clinic, the confident hands, the gorgeous results, the clients coming back and you think, why am I not there yet?

Because you have just started.
And that is completely okay.

💫You are allowed to ask questions
💫You are allowed to take longer
💫You are allowed to feel nervous before a treatment
💫You are allowed to go back over your training because you cannot remember something
💫You are allowed to have quiet weeks while you build your client base

None of that means you are failing.

Please do not rush yourself into pretending you are more experienced than you are because Instagram has made being a beginner feel embarrassing.

There is nothing embarrassing about learning properly.

Give yourself the same patience you would give somebody else walking into this industry for the first time.

You do not need to catch up with anyone.

You need to keep learning, keep practicing, and become the practitioner YOU would trust with your own face.

Everybody you admire was new once too.

Your beginning is allowed to look like a beginning 💗

You are probably not “too busy”, “too broke,” or “too inexperienced”.

You are probably just scared to start.

Being a mum, having a job, being skint, being nervous, having no experience.

None of those things automatically mean “not for you”.
They just mean you have real life happening at the same time.

I think too many women look at aesthetics and immediately start building a case for why they cannot do it.

“I’ve got kids.”
“I work full time.”
“I can’t afford to just give up my job.”
“I’ve never injected before.”
“I’m not confident enough.”

Fine.

Most people do not start with unlimited money, loads of spare time, and bags of confidence.

They start with responsibilities, nerves, and a lot of questions.

That does not mean you are incapable.
It means you need a route that works around the life you already have.

You can learn while you are still working.
You can be a complete beginner.
You can be nervous on day one.
You can build slowly instead of trying to change your entire life overnight.

The biggest mistake is deciding something is “not for you” before you have even given yourself the chance to learn it.

You do not need the perfect circumstances.

You need a starting point.

And if aesthetics has been sitting in the back of your mind for months, maybe stop looking for reasons you cannot do it and start asking what would actually make it possible 💗

We will never forget the first £1,000 we made.

We had our first little shop in Bolton. Our sign was a banner, we had a few beds, and the metal chairs were second-hand.

There was nothing glamorous about it, but it was ours.

One month, after every bill had been paid, there was £1,000 left for us to split between us.

We danced around that tiny shop screaming.

It might not sound like much now, but to us it felt enormous. It was the first time we thought, “We might actually be able to make this work.”

We still talk about that moment.

Whenever we walk around the mansion or stop to look at everything House of Girl Boss has become, we remember that little shop in Bolton.

The banner. The second-hand chairs. The £500 each that made us feel like millionaires.

It keeps us grounded and reminds us never to take any of this for granted.

Some milestones stay with you forever. That was one of ours. 💗
