Private seed produces in Oromia trained on seed proclamations and directives in Ethiopia
(Addis Ababa, November 1st, 2014): The Programme on Integrated Seed Sector Development (ISSD) in Oromia South and West Unit offers a one day training on national and regional seed laws, proclamations and directives to private seed producing companies in the Oromia region at Rosemary Hotel at Bishoftu Town. Participants drawn from Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Bureau of Agriculture (BoA) and ISSD Ethiopia Oromia regional unit have attended the training.
Opening the training, deputy head of Oromia Bureau of Agriculture Meseretu Lemma said understanding of the seed laws, directives and proclamations among the seed producing companies would contribute highly to the care that seed production and supply needs.
He said awareness creation activities on similar issues have been planned at different levels and the implementation of the plans has been limited due to different factors such as financial and technical capacities.
An expert from the Ministry of agriculture, Medemdemiyaw Neknikie who presented a topic on proclamation on seed at national level said that seed proclamation were prepared for the fact that Ethiopia’s seed sector is vital to the country’s agricultural economic development and ensure food security. He further said that it has become necessary to facilitate the introduction of improved seed varieties on the market and it is essential to ensure that the supply of quality seed is made available to farmers, agro-pastoralists and other seed users through putting such proclamations in place.
The proclamation presented to the trainees generally consisted of issues of variety release and registration, seed production and distribution, quality control and certification, certificates of competence and miscellaneous provisions.
After the training, participants said that such events would increase their understanding on their seed businesses and help them contribute to the national effort of food security. They also requested for similar trainings continuously to their staff who take the bigger share in their consecutive companies' seed production effectiveness.
The ISSD OSW unit programme management assistant Gadisa Kebede in his concluding remarks said that ISSD would do level best to achieve its objective of strengthening the development of a vibrant, commercial and pluralistic seed sector in Ethiopia.
