Healthcare media and production company based in Addis Ababa, launched as an initiative to promote public awareness on medical and well-being topics, has been active since at least 2013 and focuses on delivering accessible content. The purpose of “ጤና ይስጥልን” magazine is to promote health and well-being for the Ethiopian people, by providing a medium that will educate about positive lifestyle choices to improve health and wellbeing. We believe that health promotion initiatives are fundamental to ensure the population of Ethiopia does not develop the lifestyle associated diseases that are currently plaguing the developed nations of the world. Wellness Medical Services Private Limited Company was established in Ethiopia twelve years ago with a mission to provide health services and products focused on prevention of diseases and disorders, rather than the treatment of illness and symptoms. Wellness Medical Services PLC is experienced in health promotion and education. The directors of Wellness Medical Services PLC have observed, and are concerned about the evolving trends in behavior and lifestyle choices in Ethiopia that are not conducive to good health and wellbeing. Examples of these are the growing availability of fried and fast foods, increasing consumption of refined sugar, increasing levels of obesity, and increasing sedentary lifestyles as more people are working in office situations, travelling in cars and other vehicle transport, rather than walking and being active. According to the World Health Organization, the top ten diseases that are suffered in the developed world may be prevented by lifestyle modification. Health promotion has been shown to favorably impact the health status of populations and this can help alleviate the future burden of disease for Ethiopia. The Directors of Wellness Medical Services PLC have resolved to direct a significant portion of the company’s resources towards health promotion. Hence the “ጤና ይስጥልን” magazine initiative, which is a medium that can reach many people, educating about health and wellness in a resourceful and enjoyable way. Accordingly Wellness Medical Services PLC has established a sister company called Ubuntu Printing and Advertising Private Limited Company, thereby extending our products and services to include the production and distribution of this health promotion and wellness magazine. The theme and messages in the magazine will reflect and be consistent with the World Health Organizations’ definition of health that is “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO 1948)”. The messages will also be consistent with the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion developed in 1986, which recognizes that action to promote health must work to change the environments that structure health chances, as well as to help individuals to change those things over which they have control. “ጤና ይስጥልን” magazine will be consistent with and will help to achieve the EFDRE’s Ministry of Health’s vision which is to have ‘healthy, productive, and effective citizens’.
